How many servings?

I'm getting married in June but am starting to try and figure detailed logistics for the wedding. I know where I am ordering for the Bride and Groom's cake and what it'll look like. What I don't know is how many servings to estimate and/or budget for; because that's what dictates the pricing. We are inviting 300 people and with each bride's cake, a grooms cake is free and serves at least half of what bride's cake serves. The number of tiers doesn't matter and I also know I might get a better picture of how many the closer to the wedding.

So how many servings do you order for the Bride but not have too many for the Groom. What did you do or think?

A lot will be determined by how large you want each cake to be.  In my opinion, the wedding cake should be the focal point and the groom's cake something cool to look at.  That being the case, the wedding cake should be larger in size which means it will feed more people.

If 300 are invited and you get 70% attendance (which is about right) you can expect 210 people.  On the low side, if only 60% attend there will be 180guests.  The wedding cake should have at least 60% of the servings.  With 210 guests the wedding cake would need to serve 147 and the groom's cake 63.

Talk with your bakery.  They will be able to help you made the right choices.  That is what they do for a living.

I would definintely talk to your bakery on that one. We are not having a grooms cake, so I'm probably of no help to you. But our bakery was able to tell us exactly how many pieces each tier of our cake would serve (if cut properly) and then we are also having a sheet cake in the back. I am assuming you won't need this since you are having a grooms cake instead.

Your bakery will have dealt with this issue a thousand times and should have a really good idea of the average consumption at weddings.  Ask them like PPs said.

I have no idea how to answer the bride's question. I just want to say I'm impressed by all this arithmetic (and I spend 3 hours/day reviewing accounting papers).

Thanks.  I am a mechanical engineer, so numbers are my thing.

Thanks everyone! I'm much better looking at things from a number perspective than words, so I appreciate it Northeastohio! But I'll definitely make sure I ask my bakery this!
