What menu items were the biggest hits at your own wedding?

And/or at other weddings you have attended. What didn't go over that great with your guests?

Re: What menu items were the biggest hits at your own wedding?

  • I had lots of our guests tell me our food was the best wedding food we've ever had. We did have our reception in a restaurant, though, so that could explain it! We had lots of somewhat elaborate and very tasty canapes, plus mains of salmon or beef, and really awesome desserts.
  • oooh, at a recent event I attended, the dj didnt' lower the music at all during dinner service. It made it nearly impossible to hold a conversation... which was akward because my boyfriend's grandmother was sitting across from me trying to talk to me and I couldn't hear a damn thing she was trying to say to me. I had to smile and nod a lot.

  • We had small grilled chicken skewers and beef kabobs that were a big hit.  Also, the chipotle shrimp wonton and crab rangoon didn't last long either.

  • The biggest flop at a wedding I was at recently, was the fish.  Cooking fish for 100 guests (there was no choice of main) is not easy to do - mine was *super* overcooked.
  • I was a BM in a wedding and when they introduced the WP all of the guests already had their food.  So when the WP went to get our food it was the end of the buffett trays, I couldn't even get an entire piece of fish, it was all broken up into little pieces.  All the food was cold.  After the B&G complained they brought out new trays and served us our food where we were sitting.  (it still was sucky food though) Everyone at our wedding loved the Italian chicken.  They were surprised at how fresh and juicy it was, since most receptions the chicken is very dry.
  • Everyone really complimented our caterers and said they enjoyed all our food. • At ours - bacon wrapped scallops for sure

  • This thread is already making me hungry for lunch, at which time my Lean Cuisine will be put to much shame by all these things :(
  • We got the biggest compliments on the red skin potato salad.
  • We got a lot of compliments on the mini pizzas (obviously hand made) and mini chicken strips (they were very thin and hand made as well) we served as apps. No one had ever seen them at a wedding before and they disappeared quickly. We also had a salad that everyone loved - greens, sliced strawberry, candied walnuts, slices of brie and a balsamic vinegarette.
  • Everyone loved the food at our wedding.  I think the thing that stood out though was that we had a salad bar with tons of toppings, and many dressings.  My caterer put all of the items in these really nice class dishes.  The presentation was awesome...We also had Wedding cake, cheese cake, and a chocolate fountain with tons of dipping items and our guests loved that we had so many choices...A few of my guests even commented on how when they got to the reception we had appetizers, and a coffee bar, and the regular bar was open.  That they had never been to a reception like that.  I was surprised because most receptions I go to have appetizers and things to drink why the guests wait for the bride and groom.  Or is this not a common thing?
  • Everyone complimented the food at our wedding. We had a pretty extensive menu (it was family style, so we had about a zillion courses), but we got the biggest compliments on the chicken thighs stuffed with cashews & apricots with browned butter sauce, and the vegetarian entree, the eggplant parmessan. Full menu in my planning bio under Reception.

  • we had BBQ, so really all of it was a huge hit... the mac and cheese went very quickly
  • Our raw bar went over HUGE. Also, our hors d'ouevres went over because they were very varied and really drew from the local fare. Drawing from the area your wedding is in is always popular. One food I have consistently seen that doesn't go over well in my book is swaping out a garden salad for a caesar. You please a lot of people but about half don't even touch it.
  • Our raw bar and sushi stations were really popular.  We got a lot of compliments on the panko-breaded sea bass.
  • Our menu was the best wedding food ever served ;) Hands down. Period. Just kidding, but the food was amazing, and we got tons of compliments on it. Menus for the rehearsal dinner, cocktail hour, and reception are in my bio below.
  • Anything appetizer involving bacon is usually a win.I try to avoid apps that look like they will be messy to eat ... things stuffed with soft cheese or whatnot.

  • At my daughter's wedding (Colorado) we had a couple of families from Manhattan, who are used to 6-course plated served whatever at weddings they attend.  We served BBQ (amazing bbq, btw)!  They told us they had never had bbq served at a wedding before.   And they went back for seconds and thirds!
  • My raw bar also was a HUGE hit. I am not a seafood person and just threw it in at the last minute because I was not going to meet my minimum otherwise.. I'm glad I did! In terms of other weddings, I have to say that I really hate when there is no choice of entree/a duet entree. Like I said, I am not a seafood person. I feel like every wedding I've been to recently has had a duet entree with seafood and steak. The seafood is touching the steak, and I hate it so much that I can't eat the steak when it has seafood remnants all over it. I am obviously a picky eater.. but it really annoys me! I wish I could have just picked between the two!

  • i hate it when people wont just suck it up and eat their food if another item that they dont like has touched it. i don't like peperoni so i pick it off my pizza. done.
  • We got a lot of compliments on the prime rib and potato-tini bar.
  • Hot wings !! They were the only meat served at a wedding my FI and I attended a few years ago and (not liking hot wings) I made FI stop on the way home for something to eat. I also noticed the grandparents and other older guests weren't too into the hot wings either. My FI loves hot wings but he even said they were HOT not mild as his face and fingers were covered in wing sauce. Not your ideal look for a wedding. Our wedding is in July 2010 and we are HOPING that our menu goes over well with our guests. We are having ... Smoked Meats (lamb, sirloin, pork and chicken) Bacon wrapped asparagus seasoned rice Summer vegetables Fresh fruit new potatoes w/ green beans in a light butter sauce We are very on the fence of having a Pasta Bar. We love the idea but are worried about having TOO much going on with the food. We are having a White wedding cake with raspberry filling and then a chocolate grooms cake.
  • the last wedding i went to ... the most memorable thing about it was definitely the appetizer..... one of the bride's relatives were from Maine... so what was her gift.... LOBSTER!!  a bit messy, but oh so yummy! One of the worst experiences i've had was a wedding that didn't start till almost 7... which made everything delayed so we didn't get to eat the meal till almost 11!
  • i had a lot of compliemts at my wedding, but one of the biggest hits was late night munchies. Shortly before last calll, we had mini chicken fingers, mozzerella sticks, and pigs in a blanket.

  • I get the impression that our mini-poutines as a mid-night snack are going to be the biggest hit.
