Baker Opinion

I have a WR question for you ladies.  We're debating between these two options for our bakers.Option 1:Great bakery in town.  Very popular and makes delicious cakes.  Made my inspiration cake, so I know they can do the work on my actual cake.  We don't have many options for flavors though and it's kind of pricey, especially in delivery. Option 2:Individual baker, but makes delicious cakes.  Gives us our top tier for free and doesn't charge terribly much extra for specialty flavors.  Her mother has a lot of health problems and my FI is worried something's going to happen to her mother right before our wedding and we're going to be stuck without a cake.We have the money for both bakers.  I would prefer to get more for my money if at all possible, but am willing to spend more if need be.  Which baker would you choose?

Re: Baker Opinion

  • Option 1 -- Its more of a stability thing.

  • I'd go with the first one.  She sounds pretty great and sometimes I'll pay just for peace of mind (like why I'm not DIY-ing flowers).

  • I would go with option 2. If her mom is having health issues she probably would like the extra business to keep her mind off of things when shes not with her.

  • If the first baker has flavors you like and you dont mind paying a little more, I'd go with that.. esp to ease fi anxiety about the 2nd baker. more stress-less

  • Does Option 2 offer any kind of backup plan?  Since she works individually, she may have some kind of contingency plan (much like a photographer would do).

  • Does Option 2 offer any kind of backup plan? Since she works individually, she may have some kind of contingency plan (much like a photographer would do).I emailed her about our concerns and she said she'll make the cake as long as there wasn't a death.  If there's a death, she said she'd give us a full refund, but we'd have to find someone else to make our cake with little notice.
  • How much notice does option 1 need?  If they only need a month, maybe you can book option 2 & then switch later if the lady needs to back out.  Or - a combo?  Could you get the lady to do just plain layer cakes & get just a cutting/show cake from option 1?  That way you get the guaranteed pretty cake & the easy to turn out tasty stuff for the guests to eat.  (Layer cake to be sliced in the back & served.)

  • Option 1 books up pretty quickly because they only do two wedding cakes a weekend.  We're actually pretty lucky our date is still available.
  • Or option 3 - investigate more bakers.  My original baker turned out to be a JERK & we had to start from scratch.  We ended up with a lady who talks way too much but makes the most awesome cake I've ever tasted.  And they're gorgeous.  And my local had awesome things to say about her.  And, for only about $100 more.  Yay!  Option 3 might still be out there for you.

  • No more option 3.  We have met with every bakery in the city.  lol
  • That's a lot of cake tastings!  Then, ask that lady what she would tell her daughter to do if she had one and were in your shoes.  Then go with your gut.  I think I'd go with the cake that tasted better.  But, that's just me.

  • squirrly -- It definitely was a lot of cake tastings.  lol.  We actually don't have that many bakers in town, so it wasn't as much as it seems.
  • We did 3 in one day, once.  I had to go buy a toothbrush.  I felt like I had 5 lbs of sugar on my teeth.  Where is your wedding?  Somewhere in Florida, right?

  • We did 2 one day.  It was pretty bad.  lolWe're in Tallahassee, FL.
  • Our wedding is an hour away from here and all the bakers we liked were on the OTHER side of the next town over.  Thus, the 3-in-1.  I would have thought Tallahassee would have a plethora of options.  Gut feeling.  Go with that.  Sorry that's not scientific at all!

  • Haha.  I appreciate your help girl.Sadly, Tallahassee is like the hell hole of weddings.  Not many options for anything.
  • Option 1. While I'd feel about Option 2, I wouldn't be willing to risk it personally.
