expensive venue=larger gift?

a co-worker and friend of mine is getting married in an expensive venue and from what i gather she has a nice budget. one of my friends who is also attending the wedding said that due to this fact our gifts should be larger. I was planning on giving 300 and she was planning on giving 400. (to be fair she is doing a reading at the ceremony) also we will be spending the night ($250). do i need to "cover my plate?" or do you think 300 is sufficient for FI and I?

    i forgot to add that i think the idea of giving someone more money based on the budget of their wedding is nuts.

    imo gifts should be based on YOUR friendship and what YOU can afford - not how big her budget is or where her venue is...and for that matter, what someone else may be giving. If you are comfortable with $300 financially - then that seems sufficient for a friend

    I think you should give what you can afford and base it on how close you are to the couple. I don't think you need to cover your plate.

    I dont think the gift should go up based on the venue. yesterday was apparently money talk day and this was discussed somewhat. My feeling is you give what you can afford no matter what the situation.

    thank you. this is how i felt too but then my friend made me feel bad. honestly right now any additional amount of money for anything is a stretch for us so because we are saving so much. i thought 300 was totally fine.

    The bride and groom should not expect a larger gift just because they picked a more expensive venue.  I would just give what you would normally give (and in my opinion, the gift you said you were going to give is perfectly generous).

    No you don't need to cover your plate. If they wanted to make their money back they should have chosen a less expensive venue.

    you give what you normally would give.  your friend is a moron; you don't give depending on where you have the reception.
