Invitations, ceremony time...officiant?

So, I really want my best friend's mom to marry my fiance and me. Unfortunately, she lives in Alaska right now and we're getting married in Louisiana- which means her ticket will be pretty pricey. (I'm planning on giving the standard donation to her towards the cost of her coming...if I could afford her whole ticket I would just pay for it!) I want to order our invitations now, but I'm not sure when she will know for certain that she can come down and be the officiant. We are planning on a 4 or 5 pm wedding. Is it terrible to order our invitations for 5pm without having an officiant guaranteed for that time? I am concerned that if we do have to find someone else to do it, they won't be able to accommodate that time. Thoughts, suggestions?

  • You're still 7 months out - can you wait to order the invites?  And it really won't matter 4pm vs 5pm for officiant availability.  If your BFF's Mom falls through, you can probably find someone to fill in on that day, regardless of whether it's late afternoon or early evening.

  • I may have to wait longer, yeah. I was hoping to order them sooner than later since so many of the people I want to invite are from out of town; but I am working on getting emails for all of these people so we can send electronic save the date cards. We wanted to hand deliver some of them to our mutual friends while I am in Louisiana at the end of the month but I guess I might just have to let that idea go. It's just all complicated, since we met in Louisiana and are getting married there, but I am from Washington and now live in Chicago for grad school....I knew all this bouncing around would make life difficult at some point :-p
  • You can send a save the date without a time.  Especially for those traveling, an hour isn't going to make much of a difference.  But you do need to get this figured out.  If she can't make it, are you willing to have some stranger do it?  In 7 months you can get to know someone a little bit better.Btw, is she allowed to perform weddings?  Are you sure she can perform them in the state that you're getting married in?

  • Well, that's what she is looking into right now- the licensing laws in Louisiana. If it's not her, unfortunately it will have to be a stranger - or someone the fiance gets to know in the next three weeks- because after Dec. 3rd he won't be living in Louisiana either. One of my bridesmaids and another friend of mine who are still in Louisiana have offered to help with stuff like this so if she can't do it, I'll have to take them up on their offer and see what we can do.We're not religious or anything, mostly we just want someone with some sense of humor who is laid back. I guess I better get scheduling meeting some officiants while I'm there for thanksgiving!
