DOC or no DOC?

Since I first got engaged, I have been lucky to have a huge outpouring of support from both family and friends, all wanting to help. As much as I love and appreciate their help, and look forward to organizing and coordinating the pre-wedding plans, I can't stand the thought of any of my friends and family - or myself! - missing out on the day because they are busy working with vendors or setting up center pieces. Is it a good idea to hire a Day-of-Coordinator? What are your experiences with - or without- a DOC? How much should I budget if I do? And how do we work with the coordinator ahead of time to make sure he/she has all of the information they need to make the day run smoothly? Any advice or guidance would be useful! Thanks!Stephanie

Re: DOC or no DOC?

  • I didnt have a DOC and everything worked out fine. No one missed out on anything. All I had was the chick that came with our venue and she rocked!
  • We had a venue coordinator and he acted as the DOC.  If I didn't have him I would have hired one.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • One of my BFF's acted as my DOC. She volunteered and did a fantabulous job. She had never done it before and executed everything as perfectly as a any human could. I don't know what I would've done without her.
  • We hired a DOC the week before our wedding in a panic when we realized there were going to be too many elaborate details to coordinate the day of for us to handle. Best decision ever and best spent money out of everything for the wedding. I was still pretty stressed, but I am not sure how I would have made it through the day in one piece without her. We didn't want to burden our friends or family members with the type of responsibility needed in order to orchestrate everything the day of and we were concerned that if we delegated lots of little pieces to many different people, things would fall through the cracks. When we met with our DOC, we created a minute-by-minute schedule of the entire wedding that detailed the exact items and people that needed to be at every location. She also had all the vendor contact info she was a go-between for all of them. I can't recommend getting a DOC enough, and originally as a DIY kind of girl, I was against it.

  • We decided to hire a DoC. Some venues come with a coordinator who is on-site the day-of, working as a DoC, and some don't. If you don't have one of those, and you can afford to hire someone, I think it's a wise choice. But only if you can afford it. Ours is $500 for coordinating the rehearsal and unlimited hours the day-of. Don't stress yourself about how to work with them. They'll tell you what they need to do their job.
