Planners. Are you hiring one or not?

Every planner I've talked to doesn't seem to get what I mean by style. Just because I'm in Florida, and getting married on the beach, does not mean I want it to look like the ocean exploded in the room... I've given up on cake bakers. Should I give up on planners too? So my question is, to hire or not to hire? I like the idea of not losing my mind day of, but does that mean I need to sacrafice my sence of style for a planner who thinks bouies and nets belong in a centerpiece????

I think the best thing I can tell you is I you decide you want to go that route, meet with them until you find one that really does "get" your style. I initally started looking for a DOC but decide if I was already spending that much money, I might as well go with full service. I can definetely say that was the worst wedding mistake I have made this far. For me it definetely has not at all been worth the extra money. Ive had more coordinator headaches that with any other vendor...which is very counterproductive! I'm hoping that I will at least be happy with the day of coordination! So that being said I think there is a planner out there that is probably "right" for everyone, you just really need to make sure you find the one for you! Also I would make sure clarify your expectations to them and make sure they are on board! I made decision based too much on other peoples recommendations and the pricing structure...big oops on my part! Hope that helps some! If you don't decide you want a planner, I'm sure your wedding will every bit as beautiful..sounds like you have a great vision! :)

I wouldn't give up on ANYTHING!Also, if you have a style that you know you want, show them photos of what you want.  You can be VERY specific so there is no room for error, or you can give them an "idea" and let THEM help you.For cakes, I highly recommend Heather with Its Tasty Too.  Her cakes are beautiful AND delicious!!!I find it hard to believe that ALL planners believe nets and bouies are the appropriate center piece. My cousin got married in the Keys, I'm going to post some of their pictures.GL and HTH!

They found a flower that looked like coral - it was really cool. Also, the bridesmaid dresses were a light "mermaid" blue and the flowers were deep and rich and beautiful!

Well I am planning our wedding. All of the design and ideas are mine, but we do have someone COORDINATING day of and she is responsible for setting up my ideas according to how I tell her to. In fact to ensure it will look how I want it to I created a full "booklet" with pictures and descriptions on how things should be set up. So yeah, I would maybe look for your own ideas and create those yourself, but hire someone day of so you don't have to worry about things.

I decided that I needed a DOC so I wasn't dealing with ANYTHING on the day of. Plus, I really didn’t want my mom to deal with anything since little stuff becomes huge with her :) But I couldn't bring myself to pay what they are asking. So we’ve decided to go with my mom’s friend who does design/decorating on the side ... I know everyone is screaming 'DON'T USE A FRIEND' but I know I've made a great choice for us! She has been offering advice on how to take my ideas and make em fab. For DOC she'll oversee all set-up/clean up, be vendor contact, do all decorating, keep us on schedule, basically anything to be done for that day & night. The bonus - she won't except pay but I plan to give her a weekend at local B&B with her hubby along with a small gift. Still less then 1/2 of what a DOC would have cost us. I'd say don't give up if you know it is something you need or really want. Like *belle* I have a notebook with every picture/idea and have gone over it till blue in the face so not a doubt in my mind it will be exactly what I want. It may help for you to meet with planners with pictures of your ideas so they get a feel for your style right from the go.
