Thanks to all of the running posts lately

Today I completed Day 1 of my half marathon training!  3 miles down.  I'm going to do 2-4 weeks of the "pre training" before diving into the 12 week half marathon training plan.  I even got DH on board.I think if I make a public statement about this, then I'll be too embarrassed to quit! I don't care where my motivation comes from, but it needs to come from somewhere.

That's awesome! Good for you. Is there a certain training program you're using?

I following this:http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_4/134.shtmlI have no idea if it's actually a good plan or not. I guess as I do more research I can decide if there are better ones out there.  The pre training seems pretty manageable.

Good for you Tif!  I know several people that use the cool running program.  You can also check out Hal Higdon's programs, they are very popular as well.    Good Luck!

When I first started running, I joined an online group of people that primarily run the Disney marathon each year, and I have become really close with all of them.  Anyhow, here is the motto that they live by...if you are afraid of "potential" embarassment (which mind you won't happen)...it can serve as a great motivator, at least it does for me (as I don't run very fast at all!)DLF>DNF>DNSDead Last finish is greater than Did not finish which greatly trumpsDid not start!Just by getting out there and training and starting these races is a great accomplishment!

Laurie- what a great quote! I was telling myself today, "I'd rather come in dead last than be too afraid to even try." I will check out that website. Any other tips?

Nice! I can't run for my life. MH ran the 1/2 marathon in NYC in Aug and he is running his first full on Nov 22 in Philly. I don't know how he does it! Good luck! What 1/2 are you running?

I found this one at Rutgers in April. I thought that'd be an appropriate amount of training time. I'd like to find a 5k or two to do before then, but it's tough because I won't be ready to run a race in November and there doesn't seem like there are too many of them in the winter time. We shall see!

Congratulations!  That's awesome.  I would LOVE to do a half marathon someday -- if I can go a few months without injuring myself (ugh... I hate being 30).  Please keep us posted on how your training goes!

Tif-I am probably going to do the half at Rutgers in April too.  A bunch of my friends from my college days are going to do it together, it should be a good race. You have plenty of time to train for it if you are starting now.  A few tips....take it slow in the beginning and don't add too many miles each week.  A good estimate is to add no more than 10% of your mileage each week.  If you starting building up too fast you may injure yourself.   Another piece of advice is make sure you stretch a lot!!  It will help!Good Luck with all your training, I am sure you will do great!

take laurie's great advice. don't try to increase too much. over training and being injured... even if its something like shin splints can be incredibly painful and will suck the fun out of it. the NJ half in long branch is also a great race. its in may. you can find shorter ones on active.  com and runnersworld . com. believe it or not there are tons coming up... turkey trots on and around thanksgiving and jingle bell and NYE runs too.GOOD LUCK!!!
