  I think it's weird for the bridal party to be more formally dressed than the bride and groom.

  Yes.  It would be strange to have the groomsmen more formally dressed than the groom.

  I agree with PP's that it would be weird to have them more formally dressed than the groom. I would just decide on one or the other for all to wear.

  Do your groomsmen own suits already? I went to a wedding where the groom and groomsmen all wore their own suits (I think some were black and some were gray). It looked really nice.

  
  

  If they don't own suits already, FI bought a suit at Nordstrom Rack about a year ago for about the same price as he and our groomsmen will be paying to rent their tuxes (~$150).

  If it was the other way around I would say it's fine.  But that's like asking if it would be weird to have your bridesmaids in full ballgowns and you in a sundress.  See what I mean?
