20% service charge?

Hotels charge an additional 20% service charge which covers service, coordination , cake cutting etc. - so I am I right in assuming that I don't do any additional tipping? I hope that the 20% makes it down to the service staff and this is not just a way for the hotel to make additional money off the wedding. Anyone know?

My venue has a 20% service charge as well. I was confused about whether to tip, so I emailed our venue coordinator... this is what she said:

"The 21% service charge takes care of all service and labor; the set-up and clean-up, our wait staff, food preparation, etc. This way you will never see a set-up fee, clean-up fee, a bartender fee, wine-corking fee, or cake-cutting fee. Gratuity is optional and is not included in the service charge. It is completely at your discretion if you choose to tip the staff. If you are interested in distributing gratuity I can email you the break down of the staff that will be working your wedding as we get closer to your wedding date. Please let me know if you have any other questions."

Thus, we are going to tip on top of the service charge. You may want to email your venue to see what exactly the service charge means because it varies so much from place to place.

Yes, I have one of these as well. We do not pay additional gratuity over this. What venue is it?

I dont think it counts as gratuity. I would still tip the servers, etc.

I think it depends on the venue.  At our venue (Green Pastures) the service charge included gratuity for the servers and bar tenders.  We tipped the wedding coordinator on top of that.  I've heard that at other places, it doesn't include gratuity for servers and bar tenders, but is more of a set up/break down, etc. fee.  Definitely check when you talk to the venue.
