People can be incredibly insensitive at times, and it can be hard to believe they mean well, even if they do. Sorry to hear about everything your family is going through right now, hopefully things start looking up soon.

I've found people definitely struggle with what to say when they find out info like that. Like they suddenly are overcome with the need to say something insightful and/or witty, and it just comes out sounding like you're a jerk without a filter. I probably would have said "For future reference, 'I'm sorry' is actually a much better response when someone gives you bad news." Then hopefully they would have felt like a jerk. Ugh.

I'm so sorry about all of this. I like Nebb's idea of suggesting Mr. Insensitive could be next. Also, I admire that you obviously are keeping your sense of humor right now- that's really important to dealing with crap like this. Vally- Magner's is amazing. Also marketed in the States as Bullmer's. I would steal half of lilgina's keg but sounds like she needs it more than I do....
