Update on my Apartment Drama

So for those of you who have been around awhile, in the summer we saw that our apartment was listing for a couple hundred dollars a month less than what we were paying.  When our lease came up they tried to raise our rent again.  We tried to fight it but they wouldn't even let us speak with a manager. In the end I decided to vote with my dollars and moved into a brand new apartment for the same rent that was bigger with 2 free months.DH just checked online and our old apartment is still empty after 2 months! HAHAHA! I am so happy about that. I estimated that they will lose approximately $6,000 between the place being empty, renting it to someone for a lower rent, repainting, etc- and that's IF they rent it out for December.Idiots.

    Good for you! I think we might be facing the same issue because I saw our apartment listed for about $100 less then what we are paying and we renew our lease as of Dec 31st.

    That's awesome!  I swear they are so stupid with this crap.  I used to rent and I moved out in Feb/March and my apartment is still empty.

    Hahaha -- we're in the same situation.  Moved out on September 1.  They hadn't lowered our rent (despite the fact that much better apartments in our building had gone for only a smidge more, our neighbors were awful, and in the last year they started building the subway directly outside our building, which was a disaster that would only get much, much worse, particularly because the MTA started doing work in the basement and such), and in fact, our rent renewal said in bold caps "RENT INCREASES ARE NON-NEGOTIABLE."  (In the meantime, many of my friends negotiated their rent down by 15 - 20% because the market was that much worse than a year before)  My husband stopped by our old building the other day to say hi to the doormen because he was in the neighborhood.  Our apartment and well as a bunch of others in our building are still for rent.  I feel very vindicated.

    we had kind of the same thing, except we terminated our lease and they were trying to pull one over on us. Well, the released us from our lease (which they rightfully should have) and it's still emtpy, 5 months later. We're happy

    We had a similar situation this year.  Our landlord wanted to raise our rent $300 (which was around 22% increase) and he wouldn't negotiate on it.  So we moved out in May and the place is still empty.  I saw it listed on craigslist now for just $50 more than what we were paying.
