Drinkin' alone

Would you/do you guys ever go to bar and have a drink by yourself?I don't want to get smashed or anything, but this new restaurant that's kinda near my office has FABULOUS drinks and I'm craving one since I don't have to work tomorrow.I think I could wrangle a friend into meeting up, but I feel slightly anti-social today.

Re: Drinkin' alone

  • I've done it. I say go for it!
    Crosswalk
  • I have done it before.  I actually brought a book and it was very relaxing
  • Sure.  I might do it tonight, actually, since Vogt can't come to our g2g and I'm still craving a margarita and alone in Omaha, Nebraska.

  • I've never felt comfortable doing that, but I've always envied those who can. (Honestly!)
  • I would and have if I'm eating at the bar too. I've never gone to a place by myself for drinks only.  I HAVE done that in an airport, but I don't think that really counts since most people are alone in airport resturaunt/bars.

"Whatever East. You're just mad I RSVP'd "lame" to your pre-wedding sleepover."
  • I have and didn't think twice about it.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I've done it a few times.  One time I was mostly on my cell phone the whole time.  The other time I went, I ended up sitting by this guy who bought me top shelf margaritas.  How can you say "no" to free Patron margaritas???
  • Sure. Not often, but it's fun, especially if the bar isn't very crowded. Then you wind up in conversations with other patrons or the bartender.
  • I like to do a lot things by myself -- Go out to dinner, go to the movies, etc... So I would certainly go have a drink by myself at the bar. It's relaxing.

  • Bring a book or magazine and do it. It can feel odd at first, but you'll get used to it. I actually quite enjoy doing this.
  • I definitely have done it before.  Sitting at the bar - order a drink, an appetizer and people watch.  Lots of fun.
  • Sweet, I was afraid the responses would be like "I think you have a drinking problem, kiki."  My only friend that regularly went to the bar alone did indeed have a drinking problem.Imma do it!  I might eat some deviled eggs there, too (only $1 during HH!)

  • Why not? I get super social when I drink so it wouldn't be all that fun for me to be alone, but if you just want to relax I say go for it! Bring a juicy magazine or something.
  • I've done it. It's kind of fun.

  • kiki how did you know I've been craving deviled eggs all day?!
  • I've done it in an airport, but like a PP said, that might be a little different.I've eaten in restaurants alone before, too, for various reasons - I usually have work with me to do.I've sat at a bar alone and had a diet coke while waiting for a to go order to be done.If I was craving something that I could only get in the restaurant (I don't drink), not take out, I'd definitely go alone. I've seen other people do it and I never think "Oh, that person has no friends." I actually think it's a pretty huge display of self-confidence.

  • go for it. the entertainment value of people-watching cannot be overrated.
  • I've done it, but I think I cheated.I was already friends (we met at the bar when I had friends with me) with the bartender. So, when he wasn't serving customers, he hung out with me.Who was a barfly? ^^ this gal. Yup. Every Friday (this was 15 years ago, but still).

  • I haven't for some reason, but FI will stop at the bar for a drink or two after work sometimes.  He has no problem with it.  I don't know, I get nervous for some reason being alone in a bar.  Not about anything bad happening, just that people will wonder and think it's weird.  I should just try it and get over it.
  • Honestly I wouldn't be able to do it, but I have seen plenty of people at a bar alone and envy them for being able to do that. I don't like doing anything by myself though so I'm kind of a weirdo.

  • Do it! I used to do that all the time and loved the alone time. Sometimes I would read, other times I would people watch...

  • I've done it before.  Usually when traveling by myself, but not always.  Just sit at the bar and look confident.
  • I had to do research in a city 2 hours away one weekend. I drove there and back the same day. After my research, around 7, I went to chilis and got a beer and nachos, while sitting and watching/pretending to watch part of a baseball game. I think it's totally acceptable. But then, I also would go to a movie alone.

  • manda- I guess you better get on the next flight to Denver so you can have deviled eggs and whiskey with me.Although, if I'm not alone this whole thread was for naught.

  • I do it all the time. Go for it! The bar tender will make conversation if you want to talk, or leave you alone if you just want to enjoy your drink. I love having drinks alone. I also love going to the movies alone too though, so I might be broken.
  • I like going to the movies alone, too.

  • Yeah, the bartender made a great friend - we wrote letters back and forth after I moved for 2 or 3 years.  We traded books, I took him to a tennis tournament in Miami (and he treated me to dinner and drinks afterwards), and it was just a good friendship. He also always watched my back and on my birthday, between him and other regulars, all my drinks were free! The people watching was great - I even ran into a college classmate one night. That was wild.

  • I definitely would. I love doing things alone. Bars, restaurants (even nice ones), movies, vacations. I am really a big loner much of the time. I like just being alone and not having to talk to anyone. And I LOVE eavesdropping on everyone around me:)
