Live band vs. Jay Edwards

What would be your pick? We're getting married at Casa Feliz (I'm SO glad we finally have a venue!) and it's a small-ish space, so we don't want the music to overwhelm the space. We both LOVE live music and especially jazz/swing/big band/rat pack type of music, so we were thinking about getting a jazz quartet to play for the reception. In a conversation with my cousin, she made a good point that we might not have the lively dance floor I'm imagining with a jazz band because we might not get everyone to dance to that kind of music. Granted, we don't have any nightclubbing type of friends that would only dance to hip-hop type of music, but I can see her point. Then again, FI feels certain that with a good band leader, we could get everyone dancing and really enjoying the reception, and it's just so US. So I'm torn! Help? TIA. :)

Hey Venue Twin! FI and I wanted a little bit of both too. Jay wasn't available for our date so we went with White Rose. They are going to play more of that music during the eating and/ or cocktail hour for us.

Hey, we could start a club! You, me, and Nicksfiancee that I know of so far. :) Jay is available on the two dates we're considering, and I was kind of thinking along the same lines as you. He would be able to play some of the more modern music as well as the jazz/big band stuff that we love... ugh, I don't know! When's your date, btw?

Duh, I just looked at your Bio. Nevermind about the date. :)

If you & FI's family aren't big dancers, I would say hire the big band for some more "low key" music. If you & FI's family are big dancers, hire Jay! He totally goes out of his way to do anything for you, FI & your family. My mom wasn't able to make the consultation FI & I had with him, so the next day, he phoned my mom to talk to her about the details of what we talked the day before. He is going above and beyond with our diverse music selections. If he doesn't have it by our wedding date, he's willing to purchase any selections necessary. He made FI & I feel comfortable upfront! We trust that on our wedding day, booties will definitely be on the dance floor!

You know what makes him so great- his personality. He is definitely a sweet, caring guy. He is genuine and you can tell that just by speaking to him. He is very soft spoken and eloquent. He has nothing but nice things to say and has a great work ethic.

the ONLY wedding i went to where they had a band and i danced was one where the B&G hired a 14 piece band- the sound was so full and authentic that it was like we were dancing to the real original songs they played. IMO, if you can't afford a totally awesome band with more than 9 member, i just don't think it would be good enough to be worth it. this is my personal experience.

I agree, I went to a wedding recently and the band was very small, it was a little odd and I definitely would have preferred a DJ just because I think more people would've danced. Then again, last year I went to a wedding with a huge band and it was a blast.Jay has been awesome so far for us. I don't think you can go wrong with him.

Jay. He can make sure to play not only the style of music you want but Im sure if you have a particular band/group that plays a particular rendition, he could make that happen. I know you asked for my opinion specifically =) Smooches!

Indeed, but I'm pretty sure I already knew your opinion. Love you Amy! :D

Spowers, I am using jay also. What made him good at your wedding?Stay tuned for my vendor review!!  LOL   :)Seriously though, he just went so above and beyond for us.  He got us drinks all night and made sure we were taken care of.  When there weren't enough chairs at our ceremony, he immediately ran in to help carry some out, and he's a ton of fun.  He knew exactly how to read our crowd and played great songs all night.  I gave him some requests prior to the wedding like cut the father daughter dance at 2 min, start another song 55 seconds in, and he had everything set up and ready to go EXACTLY to my specifications.  If you want more info, please email me at spower5@hotmail.com

I just got married at Casa Feliz a few weks ago (vendor reviews coming soon) and I was worried about the dancing too, since it is not a typical ballroom. For mymusic, I had a string trio for the ceremony and cocktails and a dj for the reception. Both options worked well at Casa. However, I must say the trio (violin, cello, flute) took up more physcial space than I imagined, so if you  are going to do something like that for the reception, I would talk to Melissa about where would be a good place to put them, since the dance floor space is kind of tight to begin with. I was actually quite glad I went with the dj for the reception, I use DJ Soundwave who has a fabulously small set-up so we had great music without impinging on the dance space.  But I think either option could work out great if you plan it well.

You should have a jazz band at the cocktail hour, perhaps during dinner and maybe for your first dance and the first couple of slow dances. Then after that, you could have  a DJ for the last two hours.  But, honestly, I have to agree with your friend. A Jazz band would give a sophisticated elegant feel but definitely not a party, dancing all night long feel.  If you love to dance and want everyone out there all the time, you'll probably want a dj.
