Do The Creep!!

I have a weird little situation going on at work and it's kind of bugging me out, I had to share! 

At my company, you tend to form a relationship with some of your shoppers, especially if they do a lot of work for you. I have one shopper who is kind of creeping me out a bit!

Her 18-year-old son did 26 shops for us over the course of 4 days (they were cigarette ID-check shops, and we needed an 18 year old). I've spoken to her on the phone a few times, exchanged countless emails. She sent me an email the other day saying that her son had a great time completing the shops for my company and it's a shame couldn't do more of the same shop because he was now 19. I jokingly said, "Well let me know when he turns 21 and he can do alcohol shops!" She emailed me back and said, "I sure will!" Then she asked me where I was located. I told her that my office was in New Jersey - not the town or anything, just New Jersey.  

She replied, verbatim, "OMG! Seriously? I need to talk to you! Can you call me after work on my cell? This is NOT related to [your company]"

I replied, "Sure, I can call you in a few hours. Is there something wrong?"

The last email I received back from her said, "Sorry! This must seem really weird, but I want to talk to you about something personal - - and not related to [your company] - - so call after work so you don't get into trouble. LOL. No, nothing is wrong! It's all gooooood!"

I did NOT call her, and I don't know if I should or could! Eeep! What the hell does this mean?!

Anyone have imput or just want to comment on how freaking bizarre this is?!

    Odd. I know with clients (social work) some of them get attached to you even if you just have a few interactions with them. I wonder if possibly this woman is having trouble with the fact that you wont interact with her again for at least a few years until her son turns 21. I would politely tell her something about how you cannot contact clients about personal things, only work related, rather than just not call her. This way it's clear as to why you didn't contact her.  It seems like she's looking for a friendship, and sees you as a friend rather than a purely professional relationship.

    Yeah, that's strange.  But I think I agree with Hope's assessment.

    Oooh, also, does your company set up any shops in my part of the country?  That's something I wouldn't mind doing for a little extra cash.

    Absolutely! We do shops in all 50 states, plus parts of Canada, plus Puerto Rico, Guam and the US Virgin Islands. PM me and I will me more than happy to give you all the information you need!  =)

    I'm 21 right now! Does that mean I'm a good candidate for going into liquor stores? How does one get set up with that anyways?

    Yeah, that's super creepy. I wouldn't contact a client outside of work.

    That is really strange, but I would be so curious that I would probably call. I'm not advising that you should, and it could be really weird depending on what she wants, I just know that I would be far too curious to let that one go. In fact, I am already really curious about this, so I secretly hope you are able to find out somehow what the hell this lady wants.

    Is she a shopper in NJ? Does she want your opinion on something NJ related? Maybe she wants to set you up with her son....

    Super creepy and awkward. I would be curious what she wanted to talk about though. lol I'd follow Hope's advice and explain you are not allowed to talk to clients in personal settings.

    I'm really curious what she wants, haha.

    Also, I would fail miserably at being a shopper.  I get the whole dang table carded every time.

    I swear I'm 26.  And yea, they're still "supposed" to card me, but they do it because they think I'm 16, lol.

    When I went out with my younger brother on his 21st birthday, I got carded and he didn't.  It was a buzzkill for both of us.

    But seriously, mystery shopping has always been something that I thought would be fun to do. :)

    ETA: people are weird with boundary stuff. I would take Hope's suggestion like the PPs have said, and just tell you that you can't contact her outside of work, and could she please email or call you at work.

    Right now we have shops in Alberta, B.C., Ontario and Quebec. That's not to say we won't have shops in other territories, but that's where we currently have shops.

    Pm me too!! What type information does she know about you personally? At my job (roughly social work type) we only give clients last name and first initial for the reason that they don't associate with us in public. That is pretty creepy. I wouldn't call her.

    YGPM! And the only thing she knows about me personally is my first and last name, and what state I am located in. Virtually zero. I don't know anything about her either.

    I would probably call because I would just be dyign to know what she wanted, but then again..I also went to a senior prom with a guy after I graduated high school...because his mom asked me to go with him while I was working at a cashier at a grocery store. LOL.

    This is a weird thought, but what if the woman wants to hook you up with her son?

    ETA: Nevermind, I saw that she was in Texas. But maybe her son is moving to NJ...
