Wedding Woes

Mornin. Did anyone else watch the first part of "half the sky" on PBS last night?

I think it was the most depressing 2 hours of TV I've stayed up to watch in recent history.

But the last dad portrayed just made me want to fly over there and hug him.

  • I did. I read the book too. Yeah that last dad was great. I wanted to throat punch the dad before him so badly. I also thought Meg Ryan was pretty useless during her bit. She was there right at the beginning and disappeared and showed up right at the end after the actual work had been done.

  • thus far I've thought the famous folks they brought in were...not especially helpful.  slightly condescending--"oh, I'm an actress, I understand what this 4 year old sex-worker is going through"
But, then again, it seems like their reason for bringing in the famous folk was to show the stark contrast of lives (check) and get big names in (check) so they'd get a bigger audience (check) and so these famous folks could go back and raise awareness and cash for causes (check), so, maybe they're not completely useless.
  • Yeah I think some of the celebrities are also UN goodwill ambassadors too and celebrities in general have the power to attract awareness to the issues. The book is good though (albeit a tad graphic) and it's not so doom and gloom. I do want to see part 2 of the show just out of curiosity. I'm assuming it's going to be on tonight.

  • I've put the book on my wishlist, but it looks like it'll be a depressing read.  still worth reading, but, yeah.

Part 2 is tonight, locally, it's from 9-11 on PBS.
