Vogt

Is aggressive Christian proselytizing common in Omaha?  Or do I just attract crazies?I was annoyingly/creepily preached to twice yesterday within a span of two hours.  I've never had that happen before.  Both guys were incredibly weird.  Is it common?

Re: Vogt

  • Where were you at? That will affect my answer :)

  • UNO.  I guess it was actually three times, but one person was actually nice and normal about it.

  • Yes. Religious groups are faily promenent on campus, you have some crazytown people living right near there, and you have two churches across the street that actively try to recruit new members.I would say it's fairly normal. But, there may have been a whiff about you that attracted the crazy :)

  • Whoops, *fairly prominentIt also may have been that you weren't a moving target. I'm sure a lot of people run away and they thought they had a captive audience in you.

  • Ahh, okay.  I figured it had to be something about the school/location, because nobody bothered me about it at the other schools.  One guy was super creepy and wearing a t-shirt with an anti-abortion bible quote on it and basically told me I was going to hell because I wasn't a Constitutional originalist.  It was funny, because the quote was something like, "the cure for abortion is abstinence and fidelity," and man, by the looks of this guy, I bet he has no trouble with either of those things.I am a Christian, but people like that still just make me want to punch them.

  • I honestly think it's just because of the neighborhood the school is in. It's a business district, but there are also a lot of churches, a lot of parks, and a lot of hustle and bustle just a few blocks away. It attracts all sorts of people. But it's also a really open campus, so I think people feel free to come onto it, even if they aren't students. Creighton doesn't really have that same feeling, it's much more closed off.

  • Yeah, NOBODY would talk to me at Creighton.  But everyone wanted to chat at UNO!

  • Just from my experience (as a prospective student to both of those universities and recruiting)...UNO is much more laid back. It's in the middle of everything, it's pretty casual, and so on. I think people feel a lot more open about expressing their opinions, and school isn't the only thing that happens there. The social life/extracurriculars are a big part of being on campus as well.Creighton is all about the academics. They have all those other things, but it's not the focus. People there are more driven. And it's also set up in a way that doesn't really allow for a lot of city traffic or visitors from other places. It's very segregated from the rest of the city (which is weird since it's downtown).
