Florida-South Florida

Florist thinks our colors are shmaltzy :-(

We met w/ a florist today (Flowers by Tony) & he didn't like that we're planning to incorporate light blue/aqua into our deep red autumn theme.

I understand it's a little unorthodox (and yes, we should have met w/ florists much sooner - we should have done a lot of things sooner), but now with the wedding in 77 days and no one else having balked so much at the light blue idea, we aren't sure what to do.

Other people (bakers, another florist, etc) have seemed to think our plan was fine - or maybe they just didn't care or didn't know how to be up front with us.

Our option is to take out the light blue & not have Fi's color & the particular color combo we've been planning all along, or to risk looking shmaltzy.

Thoughts?

It's YOUR wedding, that florist should not try to control your tastes. If he wanted to make a suggestion, he could have been a bit nicer.

What's your original palette? I know you said autumn colours but I'm having a hard time picturing exactly which colours you've picked. Could be brown and gold autumn, or maybe red with yellow, you know? Do you have an inspiration board?

We're looking to use deep red w/ light blue, w/ chocolate as a third accent color. Autumn theme using red maple  leaf motif & cranberries.

We have an inspiration board here...

And these show the colors too...

The hard part is I'm wearing red shoes, bridesmaids will be in red dresses, groomsman will have red ties... but Fi wants light blue tie and so we want to use red flowers & light blue ribbon to tie it together.

The florist was like "where is this light blue coming from? How does it fit with the autumn theme?" I do get what he's saying but at this point it just feels too late to go back.

I think that combination is really beautiful. Those pictures you showed are nice so try not to stress about what that guy said. He may be thinking autumn theme as in deep reds, browns, etc. Just because your idea is a little different doesn't make it wrong. Like Jen said, it's YOUR wedding, do what you and your Fi want. Because in the end, that's all that matters.

Thanks! I also found this with a whole bunch of images w/ red & aqua...

Question - If BM dresses are red, my shoes are red, GM ties are red, and Fi tie is light blue, does the idea of giving the girls and guys a single red rose w/ light blue ribbon sound ok? Or would it be better for the girls to have a flower that's painted light blue for contrast?

We want to balance things out so it makes some sense b/t Fi's tie & my shoes.

I think the deep red and aqua are a great combo when the aqua is not used as the main color. From an artist's point of view, you definitely would not classify aqua with autumn colors... but I think it's a great way to add a fun splash of color!

Using a red flower with blue ribbon is a good way to combine those colors. Please DON'T get flowers painted blue!!

I agree 100000% with Lyn, do not get painted flowers. Please don't do it! Do it as a favor to me. lol  I personally HATE painted flowers.

If you want to incorporate some blue into your flowers you can use blue hydrangea or Belladonna Delphiniums. But those are not aqua, just blue. You will be better off doing the ribbon in the aqua blue as you suggested.

Your colors are perfectly fine! It's a great combo. If you and FI like them and that's what you want, then your florist has no right to tell you that they are bad or shmaltzy. Personally, I would not work with a vendor that I wasn't comfortable with or trusted that they wouldn't carry out my vision.

    Good luck!

I don't know what shmaltzy means. But I like the colors, the combination is really pretty. Definitely no need to track back. He shouldn't have said anything and just done what you want. The nerves!

The colors in your inspiration boards look great! dont worry what the florist said - its not their wedding!!! I agree not to paint flowers - I had to for some of my centerpieces and it was the only thing I didnt like - I too had an accent color that most people made a face at - but I loved the way it turned out!!! I'm sure you will too - dont change the vision you had because of someones opinion!

I agree with all the pps...1. dont change your colors..they look great together and its what you want...2. DO NOT PAINT FLOWERS...i have seen this and it can be a disaster...stick with the ribbon to add color to the bouquet and arrangements...
    3. I think maybe its not so much the colors as the arrangements he is having a hard time visualizing,,,and also the idea of this as autumn is hard to see..i would say its more winter then autumn...

Thanks all :-) Yeah we won't be using the painted flowers, ick. We'll stick to using the blue ribbon - probably in like a Tiffany Blue.

Where the autumn theme is concerned, I only plan on using things that we can get in red, whether it be maple leaves (dried, fake, or just the shape), cranberries, and maybe apples.
