CO Name Change

I'm sure this has been asked a bazillion times, but... Does any know where to direct me to learn about the name change process? I need to figure this all out soon. The wedding is May 1, and we leave for our honeymoon on May 25, so I need to figure out which name to book flights under. I'm thinking that 3 weeks is enough time. I could always just book under my maiden name (as normal honeymooners must do), but I would hate to delay the process if I don't have to. Thanks!

Where is your honeymoon?  Obviously, 3 weeks is not enough time to change your name on your passport but if you are flying within the US you would be able to change your name.  It is less stressful if you wait until after you get back, but if you are on top of it, you should be fine to get everything done and in your posession within 3 weeks.  Start at the Social Security office.  Bring your ID, Marriage Certificate, and Birth Certificate.  They will mail your new SS card within a week.  Then hit up the DMV, bring all the same stuff, get a new picture, get a little piece of paper with your new name on it and wait about a week for your ID to show up in the mail.  Vwala.PS-you will need to bring your actual marriage certificate(not a copy) or a certified copy.  Depending on when you submit that, it takes a few days to process and get back to you.  HTH!

Thank you so much--this is a big help. We're going to Hawaii, so the passport wouldn't be an issue. I'm thinking that as much as it would bother me to have to delay all of that, it would be far less stressful to just wait than it would for something to get lost in the mail!Do you have to bring your actual birth certificate, too? And how do I get a certified copy of the marriage license?

Yes, bring your actual birth ceritificate.  You can order ceritified copies of the license through your clerk and recorder!  :)

Does it matter what ss office you go to?
  • edited December 2011
it took us a good week and a half for the license to get mailed back to us.  Then all I needed to change the name is the marriage license and my old drivers license. But understand, when you go to the DMV, they only give you a paper copy of your new license.  it takes a few more weeks to get the offical copy in too.

I didn't need my birth certificate to change my name at the Social Security office. I also used a certified copy of the marriage license and it was fine. I did the SS and DMV in the same day with no problems. Got the new SS card in about a week and the new drivers license in closer to two weeks. I've heard lots of different things from different places, like some DMV's require you go to the SS office first or vice versa. The best thing you could do to save time and make sure you have what you need would be to call the specific SS office and DMV you're going to go to and ask them. I don't know why it would be different in different places, but apparently it is! That, or certain employees follow different sets of rules or something. Good luck!

So... I live in SW weld county and the nearest SS offices are Boulder and Greeley- both are kind of far. Does it matter which one I go to or do I have to go to the one in my county???

Oh- also it has been three weeks and we still haven't received our marriage license from Weld County... good thing I waited to change over all my stuff since we are going on our HM no until a month after our wedding....

It took us a month just to get the marriage cert back.  That freaked me out a little.  I have only gone to SS so far and it takes 2 weeks to get that card back.  I also did not need a copy of my birth certificate.  And I got married in Denver and went to the Social Security office in Grand Junction.  I don't think that matters.

We did not fly for our honeymoon but did fly to Seattle to see my family about a month after our wedding.I just waited and booked the ticket under my maiden name. It was a good thing I did because there was an error that resulted in a delay in getting our marriage license back. We didn't even get our license until we returned from our trip.Personally, I would recommend just waiting and saving yourself the stress.

Thanks girls... I think I will just book under my maiden name and not stress it at that point.
