How much did you pay for photography?

I'm starting to search for a photographer, and I'm trying to get a sense of what's normal. So tell me... How much did you pay? What was included in the package?

Rule of thumb is that 10-15% of your total budget should go to photography. You could spend $1500 and get a really full package, or could spend $20,000 for a photographer just to show up that day. Photography is REALLY subjective and there are a tons of styles and levels of talent out there. There are some very inexpensive photographers who aren't worth what they charge, and some very expensive photographers who are worth every penny. There are some very inexpensive photographers who are worth much more than they charge, and some very expensive photographers who are rip-offs.  And everything in between. I'd say that average here is $3000-$5000 for a full package. It would probably make sense to set a realistic but comfortable budget, then ask for photographers in that range, then look at them and figure out which of those is the best fit for you. Photography is often seen as something that brides like to splurge on (because you'll have your photos forever, for better or worse).  I've seen girls here regret that they skimped, but I don't think I've seen anyone who regretted splurging on photos.

ditto uppereast... it doesnt matter what we paid, stick to your budget, and do lots of research with the photog. themselves.  what are you looking to get?  prints?  dvds?  albums?  2 shooters?  all-day coverage?

I don't think there's a normal price range, that totally depends on your budget. But, I would say people normally at least get a DVD of all images, online photo gallery, all day coverage and most add a second shooter and some get an album included. Now you can find all of that for $1500 or $12,000, all depends on the style, quality, experience, etc you are looking for.

Also make sure that your photographer is insured- our experience was some of the lower priced, just starting out photographers were not insured. One that we were going to book said she was insured until it came down to signing the contract and she confessed that she wasn't insured yet when we asked her to put her insurance coverage in the contract. Make sure to get everything in writing!

5500 plus tax I'm getting 2 photographers all day coverage, 70 picture 10x10 album, 2 4x6 parent albums (20 pics), Hi-rez DVD with all the proofs and the proofs online, all proofs printed in an album, a 20x20 print, and a few smaller prints for the family.  And the one thing that I thought was pretty cool was they are going to set up a computer display after the ceremony if people want to look at the pictures taken so far.

I paid around $7k - I got epic session, all epic proofs printed, online, and on a disk (that I can reprint from) and a small epic album.  2 photogs all day for the wedding, ~1000 edited images online and phyiscal proofs, all edited images on disks (plus back-up disks, and can reprint on my own), 30 side album (~80 pictures), 2-20 sided parent albums, 16x20 print, and a photobooth set up with all images online and on a disk.  But, I agree with all previous posts, there is a huge range of photogs out there with different price points and different levels of experience.
