Am I a bad engaged girl...

for having no desire to do anything DIY for my wedding?  At some point in planning, will I magically begin having inspiration to be crafty?I'm feeling inferior.

Re: Am I a bad engaged girl...

  • My mom hates crafts and is impressed by my limited wedding craftiness.  I think it is a personality thing.  No need to feel inferior if you have the budget not to DIY.

  • Don't feel bad. You really don't have to DIY. The stuff we did we only did because it was natural and we wanted to do it.
  • No you're not bad! Some people like to do it, some people don't. But who knows, maybe some inspiration will hit ya!
  • Eh, I wouldn't have believed you if you told me back in January that I would do as much as I did. But it became fun. You may or may not get bit by the bug. Either way is okay - there's no good/bad way to do things.

  • I only did DIY stuff because I apparently have champagne taste on a beer budget.  It's cut expenses amazingly.
  • I don't think so. I have no interest in DIY'ing anything for my wedding, even with my very limited budget. I'll just have a no frills wedding. My FI knows I'm not crafty and he doesn't mind. I don't think it's required.

  • I can envision doing some things, like placecards or table numbers, those I think I could accomplish.  And if we do favors I'd like them to have a personal touch so they're not run of the mill and/or tacky.  Beyond that, I run out of gas.  I suppose I am still rather far out, so once I have my big expenses firmed up maybe I'll be more motivated to DIY when I see how much (well, how little!) money I have left.  Blargh.
  • Your DIY gene may still kick in.  If not, it is not a crisis.

  • After buying all the pieces most things that I tried to DIY ended up being more expensive than just buying it DBSE (done by someone else).

  • All I'm DYI-ing are our placecards. I had NO desire to deal with all the glue/ribbons/etc for DIY invites!

  • No way. I didn't lift a finer in the DIY department.  H actually did all the ecort cards, table numbers, bar menus, and programs himself. He was the DIY one ;) Well, that and his father owns a printing company. My stylist did a bunch of other things and we had such a Vineyard feel to the wedding that I didn't want to go over the top with elaborate card boxes, anything for the ceremony, and we did not do favors.I do admire the ladies who put such heart into their weddings though. Very impressive.
  • Question: Do DIY really save that much money? Like more than a few hundred dollars?I don't know because I didn't even really look into it at the time. The stuff we did DIY we got for free because like I said, Mike's father owns a printing company. Not all ladies have that though. It seems to me after buying all the supplies and putting all the time in, are you really 'saving?' Curious to know :)
  • Thank you, ladies.  Nothin like a little validation to start your day off right! ;)
  • I guarantee that if I DIY'd...well...anything, I would waste more money on all my screw ups than just paying someone else to do it. Also, I'm not patient, and couldn't fathom spending anymore than an hour on any DIY project.

  • Other than the escort cards and table names, I didn't DIY for anything.  I often like the idea, but then I'm annoyed when what I've created doesn't look exactly the way a professionals would look.  I agree, it's a personality thing and while I'm creative, I'm not so great in the execution :)
  • Good morning fishface, nice to see you here on our quiet Saturday mornings :) Shouldn't you be out tailgaiting or something by now?
  • GOOOD MORNING! only 9 am here and just rolled outta bed. Fishy Family Fun Night was fantastic! Today, I have to go pick up my car from my brothers, and head to BWW's for some taps and football, I think, but not for awhile.what are you up to today?

  • DIY or not is a choice between time or money (i.e. you can either spend your time or your money for something). The crafty people obviously choose time because they'd enjoy that time anyway. But that's not the same choice everyone makes.FWIW I DIYed a bunch of paper stuff because I really enjoyed it, but I couldn't be bothered on anything else because I just had no interest.

  • Ah, yes durn time difference. I am working, booo. Normally Saturdays are crazy since it is obviously a big event day, but we have nothing going on here until after Thanksgiving... Every one else is sick so I am pretty much banging my head against the desk in between thumb twiddling.

Good point Ring.

  • Yeah I totally agree with that, Ringpop.  The older I get the more I abide by the "time is money" continuum...I see it kind of as a flow chart similar to Fische and Alix's P&E chart.  Good morning Fischy!  I'm at work too, Meg!
  • Your new picture is so pretty Kate. I love your smile :)
  • That's a super cute picture Kate!

  • thank you so much!  That seriously makes my day.  I tend to think we are all a pretty fine looking bunch around here :)
  • ::jumps on the Kate is a hottie train::Work on Saturdays = a lot of coffee and a trip to the donut display. YUM!
  • wtf!!! i want a donut display!  i love donuts.
  • I despised wedding planning in general, let alone the DIY.  It wasn't fun for me it was a chore.  All I wanted to do the entire time was elope, but MIL told H and I if she didn't get to see us get married it would kill her, so we planned it for her.  I don't think that makes you inferior.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • When you factor in the time + effort, sometime DIY is more of a pain than just hiring someone else. I may DIY the easy things (escort cards, etc) but the big stuff is being left to the professionals. The only exception would be our reception floral arrangements--FI's stepmom once worked as a florist and she has offered to do them for us. But I really don't count that as a true "DIY," though, because she was once a professional and she is a virtual Martha Stewart when it comes to decorating.
  • If you DO get the DIY bug, let me know - I'll be glad to come help :)
