Some people "justify" (and I use that term loosely) a second baby shower if the 2nd child is of the opposite sex.

And they call it a sprinkle to be cute, but that sounds more like pee than shower, even.
Sprinkle? I didn't know there was a name for it. LOL.
When I registered for my baby shower I made sure all of the common area things (stroller, swing, pack and play) all the expensive stuff was neutral so I wouldn't have to worry about getting new stuff. Of course J's room and clothes are super duper girly. I just never thought my living room throwing up pink would be a good look!

Yeah, I totally know it's wrong. I actually cringed listening to her. The child is the same sex as her first one, and her first is only 4 years older. I know she has hand-me-downs, because she gave them to her brother for his baby boy that was born in April. Just have him send them back! You girls crack me up.
Even my cousin whose "second child" turned out to be twins, didn't have a baby shower to get the second set of everything. Although I know she had to buy a bunch of stuff . . .
Georgia, I've never heard that term and it reminds me of: If you sprinkle when you tinkle Be a sweetie and wipe the seatie!
Definitely sounds more like a pee than a party for gifts.

As a second child, I think that the whole only having one shower for the first kid is bullshit. It's bad enough that my baby book isn't even finished, and I never got to ride in the front seat for the first 12 years of my life, but not even my own shower? Eff that. Eff it in the A.
Some girl on my local hosted her own baby shower for 300 people. She's inviting 150 of those to her wedding, cause you know, babies are more important. (Also, she hired a photographer for her kid's first birthday party.) Thankfully it was her first child, I guess?
Oh, and I hate work showers for several reasons. Once of which being that some women in my office decided to throw a work shower for one woman's FIFTH child, I'm not even kidding. Thankfully it was after work so I got the hell out of the office ASAP.
we are having a small shower for my cousin and she is having her second. but WE are throwing it she is not doing her own, nor did she the first time. we just like to get together and having a baby is special whether is is your first or not. plus this time it is a boy and we want to contribute a few boy things and celebrate our new member of the family!

So we had an entire wall of baby pictures in the hallway when I was growing up? My brother was in TWO. My cousin was in one. I was in about 15. That's what you get when you're the second kid!

Yeah, but you could, like, go to lunch or something.
I can kind of see it if the first kid is 10, of the opposite sex, and the second baby was a "whoops" so they got rid of all their old baby stuff years ago. But someone with a 3 year old doesn't need a new stroller, car seat, crib, etc. And baby clothes are dirt cheap at garage sales.

Yeah, I actually was hoping she was having a girl, but her FI wanted a boy (they've been engaged for like 4 years no, no wedding planned, which is fine with me), so they followed whatever that told them specifically what to do to ensure a boy and it worked!
I had a baby shower for my second child... It was thrown for me by my best friend and I did do a few things to help.. But this was my second child (a girl) first is a boy, and was my FI first child. And they are almost 5 years apart. So I think that was ok, and would think it is ok for anyone to have a baby shower if there is considerable time since the last child...
BUT ONLY IF YOU ARE NOT THROWING IT YOURSELF!
When we did my baby shower I think there were like 15 guests.. very close friends and family only.
I don't really have an issue with baby showers for the second (or third, etc.) child as long as there is a a pretty decent gap between the new baby and the next oldest child.
A friend of mine is expecting her third child (the older two will be 4 & 6 when the baby gets here) in a few weeks and while she isn't having a shower she did register for a few things that they needed (some new bath towels for the little one) or wanted upgrades (new breast pump, stroller) in case their families wanted to purchase something for them when the baby gets here.
Most people like to get a new baby something regardless of whether or not there's a shower.
