name change

I know this has been posted before but can anyone refresh my memory? How do I go about getting my name changed? I read that you need a certified copy of your marriage license to take to the MVA and SSA. Is that not the copy the officiant signed on the wedding day? Do I need to go to Annapolis to get another one?TIA!!FYI... I'll post wedding pics, vendor reviews and a for sale page as soon as I can :) But the wedding was everything I hoped it would be!

You will hear different versions of what to do, but this is the gist:1) Go to SSA. Take your marriage cert - the one your officiant signed is fine, they will not keep it.2) Wait until you received your new SSA card in the mail (1-2 weeks).3) Go to MVA. Some people have had luck going to an Express location, although the MVA website says you can't. I went to a full service one to be safe. Take your new SSA card with you and your marriage cert. Again, the orig copy signed by your officiant is fine. (HoosierTerp had issues using the original when she went, but they really shouldn't have given her trouble - the original should be fine)As for the certified copy - I NEVER needed it for anything. I ordered a few from the court house just to be safe, but I never used them. The original is fine and other places like credit cards, work, etc just took regular photocopies.Hope this helps!

Since I'm not doing that for another year I have no idea.  I just wanted to say that I can't wait to see the pictures and hear all about it!

I've been meaning to do this forever, but since this comes up so often, I added a section to my bio for name changes. Hopefully it will be helpful to some people!http://tinyurl.com/yhgmfkh

Congrats!  And I can't wait to hear all about it. Since I just did this a few weeks ago...here's what I had to do.  First, take your original marriage license (the one the officiant signed) with you to SSA office.  They will not keep it, no worries there.  You don't need your new SS card to go to the MVA but you do need to wait 48 hours for the systems to update.  I went to the MVA Express in Columbia and had no problems.  I brought my original marriage license and the letter from SSA (stating that my name was changed) and got my new license right then and there.  From there, I changed everything at the bank and credit cards.  You do need your marriage license for the bank (but again, they don't keep it, they just make a copy)I hope this helps.

Congrats Melanie!  I saw some of the teaser pics on Jenni's blog and they are fabuloso.  Hurry back with more!  You looked so beautiful in your gown... and loved the shoes!  Can't wait to hear about your vendor reviews :)
