String Trio vs. DJ for Ceremony Music

I'm having a hard time choosing what I should do for music during my ceremony...

The ceremony is outdoors at Waldenwoods and I'll have 100-120 people there.

A DJ would allow us to have microphones during the ceremony (so everyone can hear our vows) and could play essentially the same music that the string trio could. It would be a bit cheaper too.

A string trio would set a really nice atmosphere I think for the ceremony.

Clearly there are some big pros to having the DJ do it but I have my heart set on the string ensemble...

Any advice?

Thanks!

We decided on the DJ for our outdoor ceremony.  It just seemed easier and cheaper (only about 100-200 dollars added on to our DJ price).  I do hear you on the atmosphere that a string trio would bring, and had our budget been a little bit bigger I think I definitely would have looked into it more.

We are having a string trio for $375 for an hour.  Our DJ has a flat rate so he is also providing equipment for our outdoor ceremony.  But like you, I love the sound of the string ensemble.

I really like the string trio idea. I think it's very elegant. We had a string quartet at our wedding. However, I would NOT use the same group again. I was NOT happy with them! I would use Rondo String Quartet or whoever Julie is using.
PM me if you want more info, or just read my vendor reviews and grades up at the top of the main Detroit Knot page.

Emily, I think it's funny how much you disliked your string trio group.  The guy who started and owns that company went to college with me and he was an arrogant a-hole (as a lot of the people at Michigan are...).  Our whole senior year, all he talked about was his business that he started and the rest of us couldn't relate at all.

But yeah, I'm using Go 4 Baroque and I have been happy with them.  Rondo is good too, and I met with them.  But for me -- it came down to price and Go 4 Baroque was significantly cheaper.

</div><div>What a jacka$$! I just wish I had better judgement before my wedding and picked another group. I picked them because I didn't see ONE bad review! Now I find it hard to believe I'm the only person that had problems with them. Oh well , it pissed me off but, by far didn't totally ruin my wedding. I think the only thing I can do now is just direct other people in a different direction!  Is that bad? </div><div>PS. What was the name of the guy you went to collegel with?

Yeah, I talked to the guy from Panache yesterday and he seemed a little... odd. They have a "basic" package which from his description I gather means I only get to deal with their website and not actual people unless I pay more for a "signature" package. No thanks.

If I go with a string ensemble I'll probably end up with Arbor Strings since they lowered their price to $350 when I mentioned my budget.

    Decisions, decisions!

I also strongly recommend this group.  In college, I was friends with the blonde girl (second from left), Leslie.  She majored in music and I don't know what she does for work, but she does this in her spare time.  They were at my friend's wedding and I wanted to hire them first, but they were already booked for my day.

They are also more affordable than other groups since they are newer.  And of course, the string trio is always a bit less.

String Quartet Rates (two violin / viola / cello):
    Quartet 1 hr., $440.00
    Quartet 1.5 hr., $600.00
    Quartet 2 hr., $760.00
    Quartet 2.5 hr., $880.00
    Quartet 3 hr., $1,000.00
Any time purchased beyond 3 hrs., add $120/per 30 min.

String Trio Rates (violin / viola / cello):
    Trio 1 hr., $340.00
    Trio 1.5 hr., $460.00
    Trio 2 hr., $580.00
    Trio 2.5 hr., $670.00
    Trio 3 hr., $760.00
Any time purchased beyond 3 hrs., add $90/per 30 min.

I would still go with the string trio. It sounds like you got a great price. Leave the DJ for the reception.

In case you are price shopping, Rondo's prices were $480 for the first hour, and $100 for each added 1/2 hour.  We hired them for longer than 1 hour, so they were actually cheaper than other groups.  They've been great to work with.
