Letting out a vera wang dress?

Has anyone ever let a Vera Wang dress "out" with the assistance of a tailor?  Were you able to get a whole additional size in doing so?  I know it probably depends on the dress.  I found my dream dress and I can't zip it up all the way.  Besides for obviously losing a few pounds, which I wanted to do anyway, do you have any suggestions?

  • I think your best option is speaking with a tailor.  They'll be able to assess what alterations they can do, what the alterations will do for you, how much it will cost and any other options you may have.  Generally, most dresses can be let out, but it's more difficult than taking a dress in.

  • You don't alter a Vera to fit your body.  You alter your body to fit the Vera.

JK,I had to say it though.  Ditto PP.  Check with a seamstress.  It depends on the style of the dress and the fabric probably.

HAHA this was exactly my thought! Get outta my head :D
  • You can rarely get a whole size by letting out--there just isn't enough fabric in the seams to do that. But ask a seamstress, to be sure.
  • That's what I was going to say too! I love Bride Wars!

I don't think that your wedding dress is something you should be trying to let out without a professional. Imagine what could happen. You may end up paying more to get the damage fixed than you would have to just get it let out to begin with.

Is the cost the problem. I know a few tailors that will let you make monthly payments and when it's all payed up they do the work. Of course, this only works if you have a lot of time to work with.

It says in the OP "with the assistance of a tailor"...
  • If the dress can't be let out without adding a gussett (which could alter the look a ton, depending on the style of dress), check into adding the lace up back as Ghoti suggested.  I have a size 14 gown that fits me perfectly even though I'm a dress size 16, especially in my hips and chest, because the lace up back allows for adjustment all the way around, and theres always a piece of matching fabric put in behind the laces so the dress flows.
