tuxes or suits?

Hi Ladies,
I'm wondering what you are having the men wear. Tuxes or Suits. I can't decide. Tuxes are very expensive to rent for one night but everyone would actually have to buy a suit. I don't know what to do. What are you doing?

Definitely suits.  Most of the GMs are in or fresh out of college so they don't have much room to get a new amazing suit or tux.  Plus, they all own suits already.

  • None of the suits my FI owns fit him at ALL, so we are going to buy him a custom tailored suit. More expensive than renting a tux, but so worth it in the long run. I thought being a woman with long legs made it hard to find pants. My FI is short and super skinny. All the suit pants he tries on look like he's playing dress up in daddy's clothing.
  • We will be doing suits. Our siblings are our WP and they are younger (high school/College) so soon enough the guys will need suits for prom, interviews etc...So we've agreed that it makes most sense to buy the suits now just to have on hand.

  • Our guys are wearing suits. They all said they would rather buy a nice suit than spend money to rent a tux.

  • We're doing grey dress pants and vests over whatever white dress shirts they already have. We'll supply the ties and pocket squares.
  • FI, the groomsmen, and all our fathers and my grandpa will be wearing a tuxedo.
They're also going to wear a traditional black self tie bow tie and cummerbund set. We considered getting a fun gingham cummerbund set for them, but FI and I ultimately decided that we loved that look of the classic black.

Our wedding is at 5:00 in our very formal church, and FI would refuse to wear anything else. He was James Bond for Halloween one year for the sole reason that he wanted to wear his tuxedo.
  • Ours are all wearing tuxes. I think they look nicer/more formal
  • I also do not like tuxes, I have always preferred the look of a suit.

  • FI wants tuxes, so tuxes it is!
  • Fi wants tuxes so him, the gm, our fathers and my grandfathers will be wearing one.
  • FI doesn't own a suit, nor will he agree to purchase one. Even through Men's Wearhouse, he can get a suit for free because of the amount of guys getting a tux, and he won't! Instead, we will be getting 2 tuxes for free. In a way, it's good because we have to get tuxes for FI, our 3 boys, possibly FI's older son, and my nephew.

  • FI is in dress whites (navy) and all the other guys are in suits - we couldn't find a tux to fit one usher (extra tall and skinny) so suits were easier.
  • FI wants to wear a tux but all of the GM's and dads are wearing black suits.  Since my dress is ivory we are thinking we may provide the shirts, but definitely the ties.  The RB's will just have black pants, white shirt, and tie, no vest or jacket.  FI's stepbrother is a GM and he is in the army so he will probably be wearing his Army formal outfit.  We left the decision up to him.
  • I just love the formal look of tuxedos

  • FI wanted a tux at first, but after talking the the GM decided that it would make more sense for them to all get black suites. Most of the guys already have them so it saves them all money. We are getting married outdoors in the middle of the afternoon and it can get hot around here, so we thought it would be better w/suites so that if they need to, they can go w/out the jackets.

  • I'm not having the men wear anything... I don't feel like I have that right to be able to dictate that, but FI has chosen he and his men will wear gray suits.

  • FI decided he wanted tuxes, so that's what we're going with. He got to pick the men's clothing, and asked for some guidance on the tuxes he picked. Smashing job he did on his own!

  • Our guys are wearing kilts.
I think it is more expensive than renting a tux, but then I never looked into Tux rentals. It is anywhere from $100-$175 just to rent the full kilt outfit (kilt, top, socks, and everything) My FI bought his kilt with his families tartan (specific fabric pattern for family name) and it was $570 just for the kilt. It was an expensive choice.... FI was anti Tuxes. He really really wanted kilts.
  • Carebear, is your groom going to wear the tux while everyone else wears suits?  We were thinking of going that route since you see more of the detail on the groom and he really wants to wear a tux.  We're doing 2 ceremonies (one overseas for his family) and wanted to get the guys black suits as their GM gifts since they'll need them again (outdoor ceremony overseas/evening church-ballroom ceremony USA) and would get more use than with tuxes.  It's good to see the tux/suit split.  Good poll!
