Getting in Shape

Saturday accountability anyone?

Morning! Hope everyone has had a great and relaxing start to the weekend especially you xcalyone day and it's officially your wedding week! Congrats!!!!

I am literally sitting on the edge of a treadmill right now waiting for H to finish his training run don't worry, no one is waiting for the machine because no one else is even in here. I got through my 4 mile run with only having to walk 6 minutes of it, though it feels like I walked longer than that. I'm having a hard time staying motivated, though, because I already run so slow I'm doing this at 5.0 and so I feel like the kid who's in the running for a participation award. It's hard not to feel a bit down on that.
Food will be good but carb heavy today with a splurge bagel for breakfast and pasta dinner tonight. Trying to feed H enough calories for his training is hard, and getting expensive, so pasta and chicken it is.

Hope everyone has a great day! We're going to enjoy the sunny warm weather and take smushy on her first long walk since surgery! yay!

Edit: FTL, we made the pumpkin snickerdoodles, though I did sub canola oil (it was all I had in) for the earth balance - so delicious! Thank you!  I think I want to try one later with a little peanut butter on it, too.

Re: Saturday accountability anyone?

  • Lia - I hadn't heard of her, but will be googling her this afternoon-thanks!
Sorry about your ankle :(  I hope you get some respite for it today, but I am totally jealous that you're playing in Disney!  Epcot is my favorite park.  And way to restrain yourself on the treats!

  • @Lobsters There is absolutely nothing wrong with running at 5.0.  That is exactly where I started and I was so freaking pumped that I was even running since I basically loathed running at that point in my life.  You are doing great with your training!  Don't let anyone else make you feel otherwise.

@Lia I am definitely guilty of adding visits to theme parks while visiting my FL family.  We use them as an escape from having to spend every single minute with my family.  I am an awful person, oops.  I'm sorry it is making your ankle worse.  It is some type of tendonitis right?  Have you tried kinesio tape?  My PT tendon gets inflamed (not full blown tendonitis) from running on the treadmill and I find taping it the next day helps it from getting worse.  Just a thought.  Actually I'm not sure if taping it really helps or if I have just convinced myself that it helps.  I think mostly it reminds me that my ankle is sore and I need to be taking it easy.

Today's workout is a 6 mile run.  If I feel alright afterward I will do the ab workout that I skipped on Thursday.  I had a dream last night that I had smokin hot abs.  So I need to make that a reality, lol.

  • heather-your dream makes me laugh, because it reminded me that I was dreaming about buying my family gourmet chocolates for Easter from La Maison du Chocolat last night.  <<waves the fat kid flag hahaha>>

thanks for sharing experiences about the running - I sometimes lose sight that I am still just starting this endeavor.

way to kick butt today ladies! seems like everyone is off to a great start!

  • I'm here, and have an extra pound too. I'm totally fed up.

Last night I made supper for FI, but I had almost nothing - not feeling the best, didn't like what he wanted ... just kind of nappish all evening. Get up this morning, and BAM! - up another pound. Right back to square one. I could cry.

Anyway - jealous that you get to be in Disney, Lia! I haven't been in two years, and I can't wait to back. Hollywood Studios is my favourite park! Take it easy on your ankle though. I turned mine over on the trolley tracks in Magic Kingdom - wrapping it helped a lot.

Lobsters, don't sweat it. I'm slower than everyone. But you're doing it, and that is a lot more than a lot of other people are doing!!!

  • Jenny, I'm so sorry, that stinks.  Lots of hugs, and I seriously hope the answer to the issue waves it hand in your face soon so that you don't have to put up with this much longer.

  • Morning ladies.  I agree, any running is good running!  I used to run a lot in college, and it took a long time to not be very, very slow (and even then I was pretty slow :)

The past two days have been very bad for me calorie-wise, I guess because I had to go out of town for business and I was stressed about the hearing, etc.  I am such a stress eater...need to find better ways to de-stress!

Today will be a good day.  Going to get some cardio and weights in this morning at the gym, then a road trip with FI and DS to see FI's mom.  Hope everyone has an awesome Saturday.

  • Good morning everyone!

Congrats Xcaly on wedding week! So exciting!!

Good News- Yesterday's workout was great- did 30 minutes on the elliptical, then 1.5 hrs with the trainer- arms, legs and abs. I'm sore today which I love!

Bad News- My celebration lunch with the girls turned into an 8 hr drinking fest (Whoops). I guess that's what happens when you have a group of neurotic vet students trapped in the lbrary for two weeks straight. Now that's out of my system, more workouts and less drinking :)

Hope everyone has a great weekend!
  • Wohoo wedding week!

I am impressed with anyone who can run. I don't care how slow, it's amazing to me.

Whinkle, grad school celebrations are a must. I am sending off a good friend on her research trip tonight, and I hope I can contain myself.

I did calves and cardio today. Now I am trying to prepare a feast (well, okay, homemade lunch) for Husband, who has been traveling all week. I found a Taco Bake recipe in the recipe booklet from Meijers. It is so NOT clean, but I figure we all need to cheat. I also made devil food cake (not clean), and chocolate mousse (which IS clean, and amazing!).

Also, I had a bad week food wise, and I think, I ate myself into a sugar hangover. I had so much sugar one day (I could not stop. Seriously, I might as well have eaten it by the spoon out of the jar. It was bad, and sad,) and I woke up all dizzy. I am not really tempted to repeat the experiment to see if it was the sugar, but I don't have another explanation for it. Am I crazy? Can this happen?
  • Lobsters - i know it can be disheartening, but the prize is all about finishing it and pushing yourself.  runners are generally a super supportive bunch and people will chear you on even harder if they see you're working hard, regardless of your pace.  keep working, you're doing awesome!!
Liatris - i would come visit you instead of mickey mouse!!  hope your ankle feels better soon!
kwith - yay for being 2 day break twins, haha.  i took thursday and friday off, it felt delightfully indulgent!

ok so i need to brag for a minute because i'm pretty excited.  i just got back from my long run, and it was my longest ever.  i finished 11.5 miles and averaged an 8:40 pace.  my hip is yelling at me a little bit, but i'm hoping it'll still feel ok tomorrow.  i'm using it as a reminder to do my PT, which i'm going to do immediately after posting.  but i just learned my insurance denied any more PT sessions, so i'm a little sad about that because i was finally starting to see progress.  oh well, i'll just have to be more vigilant about doing my home exercises.

tonight is my ma's bday dinner, so all bets are off.  but with a good run under my belt i don't feel too guilty, no matter what happens!

  • @Clovester I hate running on the treadmill so much.  I feel like I always end up injuring myself.  I think it is because I have to use a set pace instead of just doing what feels comfortable.  And it is so boring.  I still use the treadmill when the weather doesn't cooperate.  But in the past year I've really been pushing myself to just deal with the weather.  As long as it is above say 28*F, I am going to be outside.  I can't handle much colder than that.  Rain I can deal with, but if there is lightning I stay inside as that really isn't safe.

If you are stuck inside audio books and tv watching can definitely help get you through the run.

  • @Lobsters, 4 miles with only walking 6 minutes? That's amazing! I can do like 2 miles TOPS if I alternate between jogging and really fast running.

@xcalygirl, have fun at Body Pump! I love Body Pump. It was my entryway into weight training, and I love how there are always options to make it more challenging. It has been one constant in my gym career.

@KWith, are you training for a marathon? I had to look up who Hal Higdon was.

My fiance came to the gym with me for the first time last night. I didn't get to do my full workout. We spent about 10 minutes on the treadmill and 10 minutes on the elliptical. I tried to show him my weight training stuff, but he wasn't into it. I'm glad that he came as he has been concerned about his weight the last few months. He even set up a consultation with a trainer for Wednesday.

Today, I went food shopping and bought everything my trainer told me to. I really need to dedicate myself to eating healthy if I'm going to see any real changes.
  • I did really great food wise last night. I went out to a Japanese steakhouse and got Tepanyaki veggies, with a side of veggies, hold the rice. And I didn't have alcohol, so I'm pretty proud of myself. Stayed within my calorie limit in the face of some serious temptation.

Today I was on a roll. Good weather makes me eat better and the sun was out so I had a bowl of fruit and some granola on the patio for breakfast, a nice big veggie salad and some pistachios for lunch, a protein shake snack, and then my fiance decided to start talking about buffalo wings and italian food. My gym isn't open tomorrow and I'm trying to use that as motivation to not undo my awesome day today. I feel like if I can conquer my diet on a weekend, I can do anything. Wish me luck as the dinner hour approaches!
  • Xcaly, congrats on the upcoming nuptuals! That's so exciting!!!!

Lobsters, if I could run 5 MPH I'd be over the moon excited. And I know it's cliche and you've probably seen it, but slow or fast or in between, you're lapping everyone else who's sitting on their bums.

I have a theory about running and why a lot of people hate it it. When we were kids we all had to take that Presidential Fitness test with the timed mile and our gym teachers (mine at least) never conditioned us properly for running that mile, except maybe the week or two before, and then they're like okay now see how fast you can run a mile and we're going to be severely judging you on it. And then your side hurts and your legs hurt and you decided at that very moment while your brain is young and impressionable that you are going to hate running until the day you die.

Lia, will power might as well be a super power, so good for you for staying away from the junk food! Besides the ankle killing you how was Epcot? I've never been! It sounds fun. I also didn't know you can drink in theme parks??? The FI and I are talking about Florida for a honeymoon and doing all the theme parks and if there's adult beverages available in theme parks now I'm pretty sure the theme parks are gonna squash the cruise in the honeymoon destination competition.
  • Love hearing about all your workouts - it's super motivating! This weekend has been ok so far. Yesterday was a snow day and I got in some good cardio - dance central for an hour then p90x kenpo which is about 45. I ate so well. Then today I ran 4 miles this morning and was great on calories for a minute. We went bridesmaid dress shopping then to lunch at Mexican. I got a nice grilled chicken salad and even took off some of the cheese. I limited my chip intake. Then it went downhill. We had my grandmas bday party (91st!) and I ate 2 slices of cake and 3 of these delicious peanut butter cookie cups. Ugh. Where was the willpower?? Oh and 2 glasses of wine. Tomorrow I have a long marathon training run (18 miles) so I'll burn a lot off, but I feel yucky. Plus Monday is my bday so tomorrow is my bday dinner which means more delicious food/cake. Eek.

  • Today I got stuck waiting for my car at the dealership for 2 hours. They had buttered popcorn, which smelled amazing, AND a full ice cream treat freezer with good stuff like Chipwiches for free. I don't know how I did it, but I resisted both.

Lobsters- You're in a much better spot than me!  I can't stand running.  The most I do is around a base path during softball, which starts in about a week, and I have yet to hop on a treadmill to get ready for that either.  Trust me, you can outrun me!

No workout for me today, but another wedding checkoff done.  This is one very loooong day of a pre-cana meeting.  But, it resulted in a lot more open talking between me and Fi at the end of the day, which was needed, and lifted some stress from my shoulders, which feels about as good as a workout would have, if not better.  I didn't ruin the diet however, I ate breakfast at home beforehand, knowing they would have a table of donuts etc, which they did.  Lunch was catered- I had a piece of grilled chicken and some salad, then we went out to dinner after the mass that ended the day- chicken/avacado on wheat for me.  I'm at least happy with the restraint despite the no workout today.  Right back to the workout tomorrow!
