clinking glasses

My fiance and I don't want to do the traditional clinking of the glasses for every time someone wants us to kiss. I've heard of the idea where the guests have to sing a song with the word "love" in it for us to kiss. I like that idea but I still want to try somethig different. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Re: clinking glasses

  • I've seen little bells on each table that people ring to get the couple to kiss.  I would recommend staying away from the making guests sing - what if they do it while something important is going on?

  • I wouldn't worry too much about this, because honestly- if guests want to clink, they'll clink. Not much you can do about it, really- so take it in the spirit it's intended, and worry about stuff you'll have some control over! Bells are a nice option, if you don't mind spending the money for them. Singing could be a mess, IMO, and I love to sing.

Yup - you can't really control this.  You can ignore the clinking to eventually give everyone the hint, but that's about all.

Enjoy your wedding day, kiss your fiance and have fun :)
  • Any alternatives to the glass clinking are roughly 3,948 times more annoying than the glass clinking.

We didn't feel like kissing on command, so we didn't.  Our reception had plasticware, so it wasn't a problem.  At brunch the next morning, someone clinked and we kissed once to be good sports.  (Actually, I kissed him, he didn't even hear it.)  They kept clinking and we ignored it.  It stopped.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • Anything that you choose to replace it will be even more annoying, IMO.

Do you really want tipsy or drunk guests bellowing out a potentially tasteless song with the word love in it while you're cutting your cake or dancing your first dance?

Do you really want someone modeling an inappropriate kiss for you to replicate in front of Great Aunt Joan.

Do you really want to draw your reception to a crashing halt by having someone hula hoop or miniature golf putt, or perform other silliness?

The glass clinking is out of your control.  Guests will still clink their glasses, not matter else you try.

So be a good sport and kiss the first time, smile and wave the second time, and ignore it.  It will stop.

FWIW:  I remember exactly one glass clinking at my DD's wedding, and maybe one at my son's.  People really don't clink all night~especially if you don't respond.

  • If guests want to clink they will.
You can try to ignore them.

BUt I think providing an alternative behavior will just encourage them.
  • I witnessed the love song thing and it turned out way better than I would have assumed.  It occurred during dinner and lightened the mood and sooo many people got into it!

They had a very formal reception at an upscale location, but still wanted people to enjoy themselves.  I thought it was very suiting for the couple and their guests.  By the time the dinner was over, so was the "love" singing and everyone hit up the dance floor!

Their DJ sucked (bride's biggest regret) but they still had a full dance floor and I think the fact people weren't bored during dinner helped!

I don't have any other ideas of what to do instead, but don't shy away from it if it fits your personalities!
  • I can just see my family thinking up the most inappropriate songs in the world to sing... First thing that came to mind Crazy B**** by Buck Cherry Lyric " I love the way you explicit me" My thought is they are gonna clink no matter what. Enjoy it... it is the one day that PDA that usually disguists people is ok to a point. Not that I encourage PDA, but you get my drift.

  • People will clink, and you just have to ignore. We did ignore, and they stopped clinking.  I would have a really hard time with the off-key guests singing personally.

  • At Deaf weddings, they will wave their napkins in the air. You could try that.
  • I posted the same question previously..and got limited good ideas..here are some ideas:

    Kissing Bells at the tables
Having guests do a challenge (put a golfball in a mini putter, or whatever...based on your hobbies)
Having guests kiss their SO first...and you have to kiss the same..(i.e. a dip then a kiss...gets followed by a dip and then a kiss..)
Answer a trivia question about bride/groom

Think we'll just be letting people clink...and then ignoring it to make it stop if it does get out of hand.

Please don't do this one! It's gross and it's cruel!

As far as the wedding bells, the weddings I've been to with them the bride and groom couldn't hear them so after a few times of trying, guests stopped using them and started clinking glasses instead. I don't know if it was just those particular bells but it happened at 2 weddings---seemed like a waste of money.

I agree with others--if you don't like the clinking you just have to ignore it. It's classic behavioral training--ignore the negative behavior, reward positive ones--works on animals as well as FI's!  :)
