The license needs to be done within two weeks of getting the new SS card with your new name; not from the date of your marriage. So breath easily!

As far as the details, I think you just go to a SS office and bring your marriage license but someone on here should be able to give more details who have actually done it!

Just curious, where did you hear that? You don't necessarily need your SS card to get your new license.  I used my marriage certificate, passport and lease (the latter two with my maiden name).

OP, I've never heard of a time limit for changing your name.  I got married Nov. 4.  I changed my license 3 weeks later, and my SS card a week or so after that.

ETA:  as long as you have certified copies of your marriage certificate (obtained from the town in which you got married) then you are good to go anytime.   I mentioned the documentation I used for MVC above; for the SS card I needed my SS card, passport, marriage certificate and driver's license.  You can go to any SS office to get it done.  Also I printed the form from the SS website and filled it out in advance of my visit.

  • 1. Get Proof
Arm yourself with a certified marriage license -- be sure it has a raised seal, which means it's authentic. Call the office where your license was filed to get copies if they aren't automatically sent to you.

    2. Set Social Security Straight
Contact the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213; an automated system will talk you through the name change process. Your new card will be free -- if you're contacted by a company that claims to do this for a fee, don't buy it. These companies have nothing to do with the SSA and should be reported to authorities.

    3. Motor on Down to the DMV
Visit the Department of Motor Vehicles, which requires you to make a personal appearance (read: wait in line). Bring a book to read and every form of identification you can lay your hands on. No matter what, do not forget your certified marriage license.

    4. Fill in the Blanks
Once you have a social security card and driver's license in your married name, other changes should be fairly easy. Some institutions only require a phone call; others may ask for a copy of your marriage certificate or social security card. Be sure to notify:

    • Friends and family
    • Employers/payroll
    • Post office
    • Phone company and other utilities
    • Banks and other financial institutions
    • Credit card companies
    • Schools and alumni associations
    • Voter registration

And don't forget to get your new name on these documents as well:

    • Passport (Do not do this before the wedding -- your passport name must match the name on your ticket and all other travel documents! It's easier to take your honeymoon with your maiden name.)
    • Mortgages and leases
    • Wills
    • Insurance policies
    • Magazine subscriptions

  • Jess, your post made me giggle. Did you copy/paste that?

JCG- I saw it online on the SS website. I'm an NJ resident right now and am becoming a Del resident after the Nov Election; so I'm not changing anything until then. I also want to be Tara MaidenName MarriedName and NJ doesn't let you do it, so I'm waiting to change my name until after I change residences. And my license expires in April, so I'll renew NJ then, then get Del in Nov, then new Del in Dec after I change my name. Four licenses in one year seems like it should be a record.

Not true - I became Joanna Maiden Married with no trouble at all.  Although I think it's tricky if you have a middle name you want to keep (I just dropped mine, legally).  But it's a moot point since you are changing residencies anyway!  Hopefully the DE DMV will be a pleasant experience. :)

My post got eaten yesterday, stupid TK.  I just wanted to respond to this because it isn't true, I changed my name in NJ to Joanna Maiden Married with no trouble.

However, I think if you want to keep your given middle name and have 4 names, it is tricky and requires a court order.  Don't know for sure since I just dropped mine.
