When do we stand?

We're having a wedding without Mass. Do we stand during the Rite of Marriage and all the way through the recessional?

Re: When do we stand?

  • I would imagine that you would, unless there is a physical/health reason that you or your FI cannot stand that long. In that case, I would talk to your priest about the best way to handle the situation.

  • At every Catholic wedding I've played (over 160), the couple either sits when the congregation sits (Except for vows), or kneels....even when it is outside of a mass, some churches provide a kneeler for the couple.
  • yes, we didnt stand at all for ours.   we knelt for our vows, and then sat/knelt/stood for Mass at the appropriate parts.
  • We had a wedding without a Mass.  As agape said, we did as the congregation did, ie sat during the 1st and 2nd reading and during the homily and stood for the vows and blessings and Gospel and Our Father etc.  We did not have kneelers.

  • Our church gave us a choice: We could stand through the readings or they could bring in chairs for us, so it might vary from one parish to another.

  • Sorry, should have clarified. I'm putting the programs together, so I actually need to know when the congregation needs to stand.
  • For the Opening  (usually standing during the bride's processional)
    Sit for the readings
    Stand for the Gospel Acclamation
    Sit for the homily

Usually stay seated for the vows while the couple and wedding party stand for that. Sometimes the people are invited to stand for this also.

Stand for the intetercessions, and the rest of the liturgy.
  • Cool, that's the answer I needed. Thanks!
