Need Music Ideas!!!

Hello!  We are getting married on 5/8/13 in an event home in OBX!!! :)

I need some ideas for reception music...  I'm really stuck between renting sound equipment and plugging in an ipod with our preset playlist OR having an actual DJ.

Does anyone have any comments/suggestions!!!??

Please help!

Re: Need Music Ideas!!!

  • I went the DJ route, b/c I didn't want to deal with the headache of an IPOD, plus we love to dance.  We went with John Harper, who turned out to be one of my favorite vendors.  He did an excellant job.
  • I had the same dilemma. I had only 14 people and couldn't see spending the money for a DJ but really didn't want to have to worry about the music and I just wanted to enjoy the reception.  We ended up booking Music by Tommy (Tommy Midgett) because he was the most affordable.  We loved him, he played his keyboard at our ceremony and was the DJ for our reception.  He only charges $100 per hour and well worth the money!

  • We are having everything at The Sanderling Inn, a guest list of 30-40, and are using my Ipod and a good quality docking station that we bought and will then use for our house when the wedding is over.  We just couldn't justify spending an additional $400-$500 for a DJ for that amount of people.  I have been working on the music and the lists, and it's relatively easy if you are music savvy and have some time.  I will have the playlists in groups including cocktail music, first dance, dinner, and dancing.

  • we're in same situation too! will only have about 40-50 people and reception at currituck club. planning on beach ceremony and would like violin there. but costs of music and photographer are fixed regardless of size. our crowd loves to let loose and kick up heels on good dance.

but any way to downsize and keep costs reasonable?

  • We're using a DJ, also John Harper, but we'll have a bigger group (~100) and venue (Hilton Pier House). My friend used an IPOD and said it worked out great for her. They had a bigger group as well, so they had legit speakers they borrowed from a musician friend. However, if you're group is smaller you could use a docking station. II think as long as you spend some time planning it out the music will flow nicely. This is what my friend did as well (e.g. building out playlists).

One last thing is she actually had one of their friends act as the emcee to announce them and the events (cake cutting, dances, etc). So, that's something to think about as well!
  • We had our reception at 108 Budleigh and we also  used John Harper and he was fabulous!  We had a great night dancing and he kep the party going....he has a good presence about him.  Several posters have done their own music by making playlists on their ipods and connected it to speakers and they danced the night away just as they would have, had they had an actual DJ.

If you want to devote more money to another part of your wedding, maybe something that you really really want, then decide how important having a DJ is vs and Ipod and make your decision based on that.  Look around on the next few pages and you will find similar posts about music to see other responses.

  • I am having a small wedding (20 guests) in May and I am planning on going the Ipod and docking station route. Any playlist suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.
