Wedding Day Foundation

How did you ladies find the foundation you want to use?  I use very little foundation, mostly just coverup and what I do use is very light.  My sister's makeup never budges, but I personally think it looks too thick and fake.  How did you find what works best for you?  Any suggestions for something that looks very natural, but will stay put through the rigors of ceremony, reception and post-reception party?

Re: Wedding Day Foundation

  • Any foundation will stay on with a good face primer and setting powder.  There are also setting sprays to help makeup stay on as well (Model in a Bottle Setting Spray).  However, foundations that normally set matte will have more staying powder, although they do not look as naturally.  There are plenty of foundations out there that will give you a natural look and are not too heavy.  For instance, MAC's face and body foundation.  Its waterbased and is sheer and natural looking.  Tinted moisturizers are also good for people who want a natural look with a bit of cover.  As for how they will look for photography is another thing to look into.  Most foundations will an SPF will not show up as natural looking in photogarphy.

For me, I will be using Make Up For Ever's HD foundation.  It's a medium to full coverage but in my opinion, looks most like real skin.  It photographs well and stays on my skin all day.  However, you may find that it will be too heavy looking for your skin.
  • Do you have a primer you recommend?  I've never used a primer or a setting spray so this is all new to me.  Should I venture to Ulta to peruse the options or is there someplace else you'd recommend going?  I like the idea of a face and body foundationfor my chest and upper back, but I'd be afraid it would rub off on my dress.  The closest I've ever come to doing anything like that was when I used this makeup designed to hide tattoos on the small of my back for a very low cut gown I was wearing to a charity function.  It did the trick, but it didn't rub off on the dress after a night of dancing.

  • The popular ones are the Laura Mercier, Urban Decay's, Too-Faced, and the Makeup Forever HD microperfecting primer.  I have the Laura Mercier one which can be found at department stores and Sephora.  I am unsure if Ulta has it, but Ulta does carry the rest I believe.  You should give it a try before your foundation, you will see that your foundation will appear smoother and will last longer.  As for setting sprays, Urban Decay has one called All-Nighter, Makeup Forever has one (forgot the name), and there's Model in a Bottle (sold on Amazon).  You just spray after your are done with your makeup and let it set.

The Face & Body will kinda rub off if you want to use it for your body.  If you dont use it near your dress you should be okay.  Otherwise, its a bad idea.  There's a brand called DermaBlend that is sold at Ulta that is made for tattoo coverups.  It's suppose to wear long too.  I've tried it on my hand and it seems like it works well.
  • The DermaBlend is what I used on my tattoo.  I doubt there really is anything that would survive being rubbed continuously by fabric all night.  I'll probably just stick to my face.  Thanks for all the tips and recommendations!

  • I think my MUA will be using MAC on me. I also just started wearing primer. Everyone swears by smashbox but instead use monistats chaffing gel, as it works just as well because it has the same ingredients. Also Monistat is was cheaper through amazon. I know what your thinking, Monistat on the face....google it, tons of people use it as a face primer! I also just bought the Model in a Bottle but haven't received it yet in he mail.

OK, I wonder who was the first person to give that a try and how they got the courage up to tell anyone else!  It's like the first person to look at an oyster and think, "That looks tasty."  Thanks for the tip, I'm definitely going to give it a try!

<div>What about who decided to milk a cow and drink it?! Haha. Ick. Anyways, if you have semi-oily skin, I use a primer called PrimeTime, then just use a powder foundation on top. (BareMinerals). Looks very natural. Sometimes with break-outs I use a tiny bit of liquid foundation under it, or concealer, and blend well, then set with the powder. </div>
  • I used Revlon ColorStay for my wedding and loved it! I did TONS of research on foundations and found that it is very comparable to MAC and a fraction of the cost. Stay away from foundations with minerals or spfs higher than 8. They will reflect white light in photos and can make you look washed out.

I used Urban Decay setting spray and it worked well. I got the travel size for $9 just to use for the wedding. I also used Tarte's finishing powder and primer. My makeup stayed lovely all night long.

  • I really like Smashbox products. I don't wear very much powder or foundation every day since I work as a vet tech. There's really no point. It will all just come off or I'll have to wash it off during the day. But I recently was introduced to their line of powder, liquid foundation, and primers. They are great! They cover well (I have very red cheeks) but it doesn't look heavy or anything like that. It feels great and I have worn the makeup through a 12 hour shift before and it still looked great at the end of the day.

  • I swear by MAC pro longwear. I wear a mask off and on all day at work (surgical nurse) and I've finally found something that stays put! I prefer a light coverage, but it is "buildable" as well. I also wear a MAC primer underneath and hardly need to apply my blot powder (oily t zone) throughout the day! I plan on airbrush for my wedding, but this would be my second choice for sure!!!!
  • I only wear eye makeup on a regular basis (only mascara on most days!) I too have been looking for the perfect foundation for my big day. I haven't tried it yet, but I found a new foundation by Revlon called PhotoReady Airbrush. The website also has a whole line of "photoready" products including primer. Being on a budget, I'm more of a drugstore makeup girl :)

I love the Make Up For Ever's HD foundation.  This is what I use daily.  I used to use Almay's smart shade which is very light, but have found Make Up For Ever lasts longer and is just as natural looking.  Good choice for wedding makeup also.
  • I second the use of Urban Decay setting spray. (I think it's called All Nighter). It works very well. It is the same as the Skindinavia setting spray.
I have also heard good things about a setting spray made by Motive. I saw a MUA use this once.
  • I want mineral makeup.
