How much do you spend on food?

There was a grocery budget thread on another board, so I figured I'd ask here! How much do you ladies spend each month on food?

FI and I live together, so I do almost all household related shopping. I shop each week at Whole Foods (Whole Paycheck) and spend about $100/week. That mostly only covers breakfast,  lunch, fruits, vegetables, cheese, some meats, and some specialty items. I shop BJs for some meats, bulk items, sodas, and household cleaning type items. I save a TON there. Join a whole sale club! I also hit up places like Super Walmart or Shoprite probably once every 2 months for things like cereal, soup, can goods- things I can get cheap like that. I sometimes hit up farmers market during the summer, but I really prefer the quality of produce that I get from whole foods- even though it's a little bit pricier.

TLDR: I spend probably 500 dollars a month between whole foods, a whole sale club, and cheaper grocery stores for the two of us. We drastically cut down on eating out (getting fat, too expensive), so that helped a lot lol.

Re: How much do you spend on food?

  • I'd say about $100 a week, mind you we went to costco today and probably spent $100 on staples like granola bars, pasta sauce, crackers etc. Probably close to $500. I need to find cheaper produce and start buying meat/cheese on sale not just what I want when I want.

  • I think we spend about 200-250 every two months. I cook pretty much every day of the week and Sam's club is SO our saving grace. Between Sam's Club, Super Walmart and Krogers we keep the costs down and shop from a list of items we only need. I tend to stock up more so on can and frozen goods for packing my lunch and he has something to fix for lunch between working at the businesses. On the weekends we tend to do dinner out on Saturday night for date night. Loving that the farmer's market is opening up soon in my hometown.

  • We have 7 people in our house, which 5 are kids and we spend about 550 a month. This include everything we eat and I cook all the time. We really dont have a lot of junk food. I usually amke them cookies or cakes for desert......

  • We're pretty good at keeping the costs down while still eating healthy. I would say $200/month approximately
  • I'd say about $400/month. We eat almost all fresh foods and a lot of fish/chicken, so that jacks up the $$. FI and my son eat like horses too so that doesn't help lol

  • It's just the two of us, so I'd say I spend about $300/month on just food groceries. I tend to also get our cleaning supplies and toiletries at the grocery store, so i'm not 100% sure how much I spend on just food alone. I'd say I spend closer to $350-$400 if you include those extra groceries.

I cook dinner 6 times a week, and we'll usually go out for dinner on Saturdays. We both bring lunches to work and eat breakfast at home, so pretty much the only time we eat out is saturday nights. i don't eat meat so that saves us some $, plus Dan doesn't like to eat red meat too often, so pretty much it's just chicken, fish, and turkey for him.

Dan's going to be gone for almost all of april, so it will be interesting to see how much i alone spend on groceries.

  • It's been a while since it's been just the two of us and we've had our own place with our moves (living with parents had us eating out more so we could have our space) and now we are long distance.  So based on about a year ago when things were "normal" for us, I'd say we spent $350-500 on groceries each month depending on things.  I would cook a lot for dinner but FI worked for himself and was at home during the day and he never cooked for himself.  We like to eat out a few times a week.  Things got cheaper once we discovered a great farmers market but we don't live near it any more :-(
  • volleygurl that's how we keep our bill down so much, we eat a ton of fresh foods but the farmer's market by us makes it cheaper to do so :)
  • I wish I lived near a cheap farmers market!  The few around me are actually pretty pricey.  I would say we spend around 350-400ish on groceries this may or may not include toiletries and household products.  I buy a lot of gluten free stuff so that can crank up the cost.  A good loaf of bread is about 5 bucks.  We have a bread maker so I should spend the extra amount to buy all of the flour and then start making it myself.
  • I'd say we're somewhere between $250 and $300 at this point.  I started planning the weekly menu in advance so that helped me to only buy the things that I need.  I find I'm throwing away much less food since we're using it weekly instead of just having it "incase".  That includes food for the rabbit (the greens for his breakfast) and toilettries and we drink a lot of bottled water too, all of which we buy at BJ's.  I also buy all my ground hamburger and chicken breasts at BJs and sometimes I'll pickup a package of steak tips if they're on sale.  We are eating a lot more fresh foods since FI is on his "salad for dinner" diet and I'm trying to have more fruit for breakfast and lunch.  We pack our lunches everyday and eat breakfast at home or take it to work with us.  We eat out when the mood strikes which might be twice a month.
