Re: Tux Colors

  • edited December 2011
The link isn't working... But I think I found it here.

My cousin just got married 2 weeks ago & all the guys were in gray suits, with the girls in yellow dresses.  It looked great together, I think!  I also agree with you that for a outside wedding in July, black would be pretty dark.  I don't know if I like the idea of GM in black & FI in tan.  I guess I'd have to see it, but it sounds kind of strange to me.

My FI & his GM's don't have much contrast, just different bouts really.  But that's what FI wanted, so that's what we're doing!

Edit:  I found your color on DB.  I think that gray would look best with that color for a outside wedding in July.  I would stick with what you had originally planned, if I were you!

A lot of people are doing grey.  I've seen it on countless wedding photographer's websites and i think it looks good.  I think the man is crazy especially when he says have the FI wear tan and the rest wear black...I've never heard of that.  Maybe he has black and tan beer on his mind.

That guy does not know what he's talking about! I agree that grey is better for summer, I'm also planning on grey instead of black for a May wedding. Also, my sister had light gray tuxes (the Calvin Klein ones) and an ivory dress and the bridesmaids had grey dresses too. Her husband's tux and our dresses both looked good with her ivory/off-white dress. Do what you want!

We're getting married at the end of June (but indoors) and FI/GM are all wearing black tuxes.  I just don't like the look of any other color for a tux.  GM will be wearing ivory shirts (my dress is ivory) and royal blue vests/ties (Bridesmaid's dresses are from DB in Horizon Blue).  FI is wearing a royal blue shirt and silver vest/tie.  My dad's wearing an ivory shirt and black vest/tie.

Personally I don't like the color combination of GM wearing black and the groom wearing tan.  It just seems weird in my mind.  I'd say go with whatever vision you have for YOUR wedding.  I really wouldn't go by the tux shop guy's advice at all.  Some people like to pretend that they know everything when really they know nothing.  I really wouldn't worry at all about the "right way" to do tuxes.

We're doing charcoal grey tuxes in August. I think that its not so much the suit color that looks promy but the matching vests and bridesmaid dresses. We're doing charcoal suits with charcoal vests. We went to Jos A Banks, and they had several different colors of grey. Do the grey tuxes, the groom and groomsmen will thank you in the summer heat!

Have Tip Top Tux order one of each color for your FI to try on - go in and then see what you like best then.... We are getting our Tuxes at Tip Top Tux and when I was confused on black vs. brown tux colors they just ordered both in and I was able to see them on - I personally say GO with Grey look online and find pictures of suits in that color... it's what you liked in the first place

Personally I agree with PPs on how it will look very strange to have your FH in tan and everyone else in black!

I can't beleive he said that... Gray is really popular for weddings these days.
We are doing charcoal gray suits for our outdoor wedding in May. I don't think we will be doing vests with them.. so that could be an option, just have ties, I personally like that look better.

There is nothing wrong with a grey tux! I've never heard that grey is only a prom color. Was the guy trying to upsell you or something? We are doing grey cutaway coats for our outdoor July wedding and I think that they'll look great. Our BM dresses are brown and I'm not even worried about matching.

As for the groom not standing out enough-- hello!-- he is the GROOM! I don't think that a single person will mistake him for someone else. Pick the colors that you like and don't worry what one salesman says.

I was just at a wedding with gray tuxes and I thought they looked really sharp! The wedding was outside in TX and it was HOT and they guys already were feeling the heat and I can only imagine how sweaty they would have looked if they were in black tuxes Undecided.

I would stick with your plan to go with the gray tuxes!
And yes as the pp said, no one is going to confuse your groom with someone else :). I think it is fun to distinguish him by a different flower or a different vest color or something small but just because it is fun to have something slightly different. I would go with whatever you want here. We had Joe in the same brown tuxes as the rest of the guys but he had an ivory vest instead of the champagne the rest of the GM had and it worked great for us!

I am doing Charcoal gray for an Outdoor July Wedding and my dress is ivory.....this guy does NOT know what he is talking about. Black and Tan do not sound good together....maybe he should be in another line of work...how many brides is he telling this to.....hopefully none of them are listening.

Me neither! Unless black and tan were the colors someone was using.

I would just go w/your original plan.

I completely agree with everyone else.  Of course, I'm having grey tuxes in July as well.  :-)
