Second line before or after reception??

Hey ladies! I need you opinion! Our wedding is at St Patrick's on Thursday 30 December (long story for the Thursday wedding but it's over the holidays so not as odd as it may seem) at 7:00 pm.  Catholic wedding so it may last up to an hour.  Our reception is at Latrobes on Royal starting 8-8:30 ish.  Having the wedding in NOLA, 90% of our guests will be from out of town, so I guess you could call it a destination wedding. We both would LOVE to have a second line, but the walk from St Patricks to Latrobes is 1. across Canal, 2. ten block, 0.7 mile walk 3. an awkward part of town to have a second line?.  What do you guys think?  We've also considered doing a second line after the reception, as a send off and possibly ending at a bar like Pat O's.  So second line before or after reception? Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Planning this from out of town and not a native to the city has sometimes been a challenge! Thank God for these boards!

I've been to receptions where the second line was at the end as a send off. I think that's perfect given your locations.

We had our secondline after the reception and it was perfect!!! Your guests will have had some drinks by then, so they'll be able to let loose. Also, there were will be a lot of people out at that time, so you'll have a great crowd of tourists (though this is the also the case for a day time secondline, too!). I liked having our secondline at the end of the night because after all the big moments are over (cutting the cake, first dances, toasts, etc) you still have one big thing to look forward to. It kind of ends the night with a bang! Also, if you get hot or your feet hurt from walking, it's at the end of the night so it won't matter. I think the secondline is so much fun no matter what time you have it, but don't be discouraged from having it after the recption. It's definitly a good time!

So good to hear some of you have done it after! Did you change into a going away dress or where you still in your wedding dress?  Also, did yours (or ones you've been to) end at bar?  I'm just still trying to figure out the logistics.  Thanks for the help ladies!

I didn't change into a going away dress, but my dress wasn't too big so it wasn't a problem. I will say that if you're trying to keep your dress super clean, I wouldn't wear it in the secondline (this probably isn't an issue during the day, but at night there just seems to be more spilled drinks on the streets). I pretty much sweeped up Bourbon Street with my dress and it's not the same dress any more, but it's your wedding dress and you're only going to wear it once so have fun! Also, there were a few times that my heel got stuck in the bustle, and it woould have been nice to not worry about it because I had to keep stopping and untangle it. But it wasn't enough of a problem to make me wish that I'd had a going away dress.

Our secondline started at the reception (Arnaud's) and went a few blocks around the Quarter, then ended at the Omni Royal (where our room block was). I liked that it ended at the hotel because then my guests could either stay in for the night, or change quickly and go back out. But ending it at a bar would be fun, too!

We're having ours after the reception and ending at a bar - not sure where though. We're thinking Pat Os!

I think that's where we are planning to end! I don't know if we need to call and give them a heads up or what?

Both New Orleans weddings I've been too, they just second lined around the room.  At one, we second lined around the room and out the door and then the wedding was over.  I feel like the second line signifies the end of the wedding.  Obviously, its much more authentic when you second line down the streets of the quarter, but you can do it inside at the reception too (this is better for the elderly too).  This is what I plan to do at my wedding later this year.

We definitely decided to have it after the reception!  I think I'll probably still wear my wedding dress...you're right, you only get to wear it once, so why not! I'm sure at that time of night I'll be sweeping up Bourbon St but oh well.  I think we'll have to have someone in charge of getting gifts/card box to our room and I guess they miss out on the second line :( How did you guys that had the second line after the reception handle this?  Also, how do I change my profile settings so that I have a user name that shows as opposed to my email?

A day-of wedding coordinator would be able to bring your personal belongings to your hotel, as well as help you run the event throughout the evening and supervise the setup and vendors for your reception.

PS--the Second Line traditionally depicts the end of an event. Some use it as the end of the ceremony (too far from St. Pat's to Latrobe, so good choice not to do that) and transition into the reception and some use it to end the reception.

For wallyandkristin (the person that has only seen the second line happen within the reception location): the second line is style of music and dance and you don't have to actually parade for it to be legit.  However, since the second line history stems from Jazz Funerals, the most authentic second line happens in the streets (the first line of people is the band, the second line of people is those that follow the band--hence the name).

    Have a great time!

We're also thinking of doing a second line after the reception to a bar in the French Quarter.  Does anyone know if the $300+ permit/officer fee requried for that??
