it's not new, but i always recommend A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini (same author as The Kite Runner)... tough to get through at times but a beautiful book.

another one of my favorites is The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver.

Garth Stein is an amazing (and currently super trendy) writer. "The Art of Racing in the Rain" was a huuuge bestseller that's being turned into a movie starring Patrick Dempsey... but I thought it was a tad bit sappy compared to his other stuff. However "How Evan Broke His Head and Other Secrets" and "Raven Stole The Moon" are beyond amazing.

Kate Atkinson is one of my favorite authors... and she has a ton of really amazing stuff. Her recent stuff is very mystery/crime drama based... but the older stuff is a lot different... all of it is really good, though. She's quite the wordsmith, so I've heard others (usually people who don't read quite as often) complain that sometimes it's hard to follow... so read with caution.

Jodi Piccoult has a bunch of good ones.

I like Nicholas Sparks as well, although not sure how new any of his are

Tami Hoag has some mysteries that are set in Mpls, although they also are not new.

I have Sarah's Key, but I haven't started it yet.

I'll second the Southern Vampire series (these are the bookies that True Blood is based on.) I think I have them in PDF too...

Have you read the Janet Evanovich series? Those are entertaining, quick reads too.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See was really good. I read it on my honeymoon.

I just started a book called East of the Sun that I'm really liking. It is about young British women who take an ocean liner to India in the 1930s for various reasons. The writing is really good and it pulls you in-- it has an air of mystery about it.

    Heaven is For Real
    90 Minutes in Heaven
These are more "teenager-ish" but I'm addicted to the Pretty Little Liars books, and just started the Lying Games, both by Sara Shepard.

@FutureMrsSheeley - u liked lying games? I've heard mixed reviews but I'm totally about the teeny-bopper romance/drama books haha! :)

I started reading "The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo" and really don't like it... I don't think I'm a mystery genre person?

I was the same way with that book, but I love mysteries!  I just couldn't get into it.  Might try again some other time, though!

I found the girl with the dragon tatoo took a little while to get into, but when it gets going, its really good.

    This.

I was also going to suggest Janet Evanovich like Steph did. If you like "Something Borrowed" etc, you'll probably like these. Her Stephanie Plum series (One For the Money, Two for the Dough, etc) is easy and entertaining. Plus there are about 20 of them, so you'll have plenty of them if you end up liking them.

I'll throw in my plug for anything by Carl Hiaasen.  His stories are more "fluff" but his book skinny dip is a riot and a half.

I struggled to get into the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo at first too but I'll second what a pp said, once I got into it, I plowed through all 3 books in less than a week!  Totally hooked.

My husband has me hooked on Vince Flynn (local guy who writes about crime mystery/spy/espionage in DC) and David Baldacci (not local guy who writes about the same type of stuff) and I really enjoy both of them which surprised me.

William Kent Krueger is a local author who writes crime novels based in Northern MN and I of course love Johnathan Sanford's Prey books.  (lol, can you tell I like mystery novels?)

I recently read Still Alice which is about a woman who has early onset Alzheimers that I thought was very thought provoking as well - but I also have a grandparent who had dementia so it was timely.
