How far in advance do you make your appointment? I am marrying on July 24th

    The appointment depends on your township but the license is only valid for 30 days prior to your wedding. So I'd say to go July 1st at the very earliest.

    In the township I live in (North Brunswick, NJ) you can apply anywhere up to 6 months before the wedding date.... but it is only good for 30 days AFTER is picked up. Each town is different, so check with your town's municipal building.

    Do you apply in the town the church is in or the town you live in?

    I think you can apply at the town the bride or groom lives in (aka the one on your license) and that it shouldn't matter if you live in different towns. We are from out of state so we applied at the town the church was in. You need to check with the different cities which types of payment are taken and how soon you can apply.

    Our priest insisted that it needed to be the town the bride resides in, but I've heard some girls on here doing the groom's town. Every township and church differs.

    Every town is different.  my town told me I can get it up to 6 months in advance.  They told me to come no later than 2 weeks before to start the process.  My suggestion is to call the town and see what they require because everytown is different

    Our was done in my hometown. Had to be done no earlier then 30 days before and no later then 1.5 weeks before (processing time I guess). We paid with cash.

    Call and make an appointment, people go on vacation and you may not be able to get it when you need.  This happened to me, I called a few weeks before the wedding and the lady was going to be away, so she fit me in just before she left.

    This. I called my city hall and they told me to come in June for my 08/28 wedding. I'm going next Thursday to apply and will pick up a week before the wedding. They told me they get booked up fast during the summer because there are alot of weddings and the office that issues the applications is only open Tuesday 9-12 and Thursday 1-4. You have 6 months to pick it up and the 30 day countdown begins the day you pick it up. It costs $28

    You used to have to do it in the bride's hometown - that was the rule in '97, for my first wedding. Now, it's wherever. But you have to file it where the wedding takes place.
