PC gone out of control

So today at work I was taking this class about giving effective presentations.  We were talking about visual aids - PowerPoint, flipcharts, whiteboards, etc.

So then the teacher says this: "The word "flipchart" is considered offensive, because "flip" is a derogatory term for Filipinos, so don't use that word anymore."

Umm....what?  Seriously?  I try to keep pretty PC - I try not to use the word "retarded" and I'm not down with using "gay" to mean "stupid" - but seriously - FLIPCHART?  By this token, are flip flops and Mick Jagger also considered offensive?  Argh.

Re: PC gone out of control

  • So... how does one flip someone the bird? And what does one do with pancakes?
    image
  • Exactly!  How offensive.

But seriously, if we remove every word that has derogatory connotations from their innocuous usages, we'll have no words left!
  • I think people should stop saying "white rice" and "white bread". White is derogatory to me. I'm caucasion dammit!

    *stomps foot*

    People piss me off. Getafuckinggrip.

  • Can...I..toss my pancakes?

    THAT JUST SOUNDS WORSE.

  • Nova - glad you're not offended but even if you were offended by being called a "Flip" then WHY SHOULD THE WORD FLIPCHART BE PUNISHED?????

I seriously can't wrap my head around this and I can't believe our instructor actually said it with a straight face.
  • Did she bother to tell you what the new PC term for this chart is?  Did she tell you that no one else in any other industry or meeting will have a clue what you are referring to when use the new name?

<div>I think people like that just get off on following rules, not matter how insane.</div><div>
</div><div>For instance, I was smoking a cigarette at school (I'm a month quit now, btw), across the street from my school which is by the EMPTY softball field and a bunch of storage buildings, and a professor/staff member, walked all the way across the street to tell me I can't smoke on campus.</div><div>

  • Was said instructor Filipino. Or has she just gone to WAY too much sensitivity training?

Oh and um, the word cracker doesn't offend me. Just in case you wanted to know.

Was it on this board that some girl tried to get people to stop using the word Mick? It might have been on the bump or livejournal, but it was CRAY-ZEE.

  • I would have never even realized that could be considered offensive.

  • No mery - she was white as can be, with a blond bouffant to boot!
  • Liz- congrats on quitting!  I'll be 5 years out in December.  FWIW I hate it when people smoke around me now  and would probably be an annoying person and tell a smoker they aren't allowed to smoke inside.

  • *Mick is an ethnic slur.  But I can't remember towards which ethnic group?

  • Mick is a slur against the Irish, I believe.

  • Yes, calling someone a "mick" is a slur against an Irish person.

But I agree, removing the word flip from her vocabulary is totally taking it too far.
  • I've never even heard the term before.  I havent been gone from the States that long have I?

[QUOTE]Wow, that is now the second PC lesson for me today!  My brother told me that he was at his friend's house last night and he told his friend's son to sit "Indian Style," and the kid freaked on my brother, saying "MY TEACHER SAID THAT'S A BAD WORD!!!!  YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO SAY "CRISS CROSS APPLE SAUCE!!!!!"  My brother is almost 30 with no kids, so he was all, "well excuse the hell outta me!"

<- laughs and wonders if that term is on Urban Dictionary....
  • I'm pretty pro-PC, but that just doesn't make any sense. If somebody were using the word in a derogatory way, they should choose a different word, but that's completely irrelevant. That's definitely a case of it going too far.

I do think "Indian giver" shouldn't be used, since it describes somebody who goes back on their word or can't be trusted. That's derogatory, because it implies negative stereotypes about First Nation/Native American culture.

Flipchart, though... Really? I would've laughed. And I still want to know what the new word is!
  • Mick is a slur to the irish and i believe evolved since many Irish last names start with "Mc".
