engagement ring

Now I know its traditional for some to just get a ring from their mate without picking it out with him...but honestly...he told me to pick out what I wanted and we could go together (im sure some maybe have done that or at least looked at rings together). Now its coming up to the time to actually pick a ring out and to be honest the place I had thought about for so long just got a very bad review from a reliable source and now im thinking of actually looking at other stores. Ladies in SE MI, where is a really nice, affordable place to get a quality ring. Where did you look or go??

Affordable? (cause I know someone will ask)...around $2000 - $3000 is our price range

Re: engagement ring

  • we got mine at Kramer's Jewelry in Southfield. Our families have been going there for years. They do a lot of custom work, and have a pretty big selection. And the best pricing we could find!! (and FI did a TON of research)

It's not the nicest location or building, but don't let that stop you from checking it out!!!!!! Seriously. Cannot recommend enough.

  • Chantelle Jewelers in Madison Heights is wonderful.  It looks pretty run down from the outside, but the work is top quality and my ring is gorgeous.  They can work with whatever budget you may have.

  • ok...so my take way from these uggestions that if the building looks run down, they do excellent work!

ha ha ha. Just messing with you. Thanks so much for the recommendations. There are just too many jewelry stores to go each one.
  • I used Miner's Den in Royal Oak. They were very friendly and helpful and willing to negotiate on price.

And don't feel bad, I picked mine out with my FI months after we were officially engaged.

  • We got my ring from Rottermond in Milford and loved the service. Very very helpful and within our budget!
  • Thanks beauty. our engagement party is in 3 weeks and would be nice to at least be wearing a ring, lol.
  • We went to Lavdas because FI had a connection. However, I've heard really good things about Kramers.

  • Fi also got my ring from Lavdas. We purchased both of our wedding bands there too. I was extremely happy with their customer service.

  • I worked at a jewelry store for a few years and I would suggest a small, family owned type place. They are always friendly and willing to work with your budget. I would also recommend buying your center stone separate from your setting that way you can work with your budget a little more and know exactly what stone you are getting!! FI got my ring from Waterfall jewelers in Waterford and they have been great! Good luck and congrats!!

  • I went with my fiance to pick mine out too! We went to Herman's Creations in Southfield. Have been the family jeweler for years. Not in the greatest area but they do fine work. My diamond came GIA certified and I even got to design my ring. We saved a lot of money and my ring is gorgeous!

  • I got mine from Howard's Jewelry on Van Dyke in Warren (just south of 15 Mile Rd I think). They were going out of business, but then sold to another store owner who kept the name. Since it's a different owner, not sure what they have, but I have gone in there and they've cleaned my ring for me for free because I bought it there, even though the new owners have no idea, LOL.

Maybe I'm partial to the smaller store owners with less glitzy store fronts, but based on the above, I suspect they are willing to be very helpful and find something you like.
  • We got ours at Kays and really are happy with it. We walked in with a price in mind and they dealed with us till we could get my dream ring in our budget. They also had us come  back when a bigger sale was going on to get my band, so it would be cheaper!

  • DH bought mine from Golden Gifts in Livonia. His family has been going there for years. The owners are good friends of DHs family and they are wonderful to work with. They work with all price points and will get you the best. I love love love my rings!!!
  • Ditto about Golden Gifts, but he has a family/friend connection there, so my fiance got an EXCELLENT deal. Plus he paid for the ring in cash, so that always helps. My ring was customed designed too.

  • I worked with Larson's Jewelers in Novi and loved the experience. Mr. Larson will be my jeweler for life. Great service and he beat every "mall jeweler" price... By at least $1000.
  • FI got mine from Kay. We've had horrible experiences with them since then with resizing, service, etc...We are looking in to more of a family/independent shop for our bands. We've talked to a couple and they seem really great. I would definitely go independent if you can.

I also got mine at Howard's and if you go there ask for Koko or Beanie (yes, those are the names).  They will work with you and the price range you want.

I think it was a son or nephew who decided to purchase the business but they have been around for decades.

I found out that places like *ales and Cayes tended to be extremely pushy, especially opening a credit card with them.  We politely said no, and that we would pay 90 days same as cash and they still pushed it!!
  • The Diamond Vault of Troy is amazing! Randy is wonderful and they will give you many options and can work in any price range. Additionally they will let you custom design a ring so it is exactly the way you want it and there is no extra cost.
  • MINERS DEN!!!
    Seriously, best place ever.

  • Thanks Ladies. i will narrow it down a bit but yeah i definetly wouldnt mind some thing was NOT in the mall. I guess Im just nervouse because i wanted a big center stone and im not sure if its going to be possible. But if I have to comprimise on that...its possible if i find a ring that i love.
  • im so glad to read that others are engaged without a ring as well... i feel really silly and havent told any family yet. it just doesnt seem quite real.
