How far in advance should you book your caterer?

How far in advance should you book your caterer?

I don't want to try and book too early but I don't want to book too late and then they're already taken.

I think you can book as soon as your ready.  Mine was booked 13 months out.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

I would book as soon as you know exacly who you want to use. We booked ours with our venue and that was over a year out.

I agree with everyone. If you have found your venue, there is no such thing as too early UNLESS: I've seen brides on our local board (yes, Detroit, the recession home) who booked at venues that had great deals, and the venues closed/went out of business. If your local board in the area of your wedding has had long standing good luck with your venue, you should be ok.

It depends on the venue and the time of year. Some venues are booked up 2 years ahead in wedding season. If you have a venue in mind, call them and ask how far ahead you need to book. Also, ask how long they will hold a date without a deposit. Some places are open to this, and will call you if someone else is interested in the same date.

I think PPs basically covered it. It's only too early if you haven't found your venue because some venues require using in-house catering.
