HRM/GPS- recs?

I have been running inside on the treadmill and would like to transition to running outside but I can't tear myself away from the stats on the treadmill.

Does anyone use a GPS device while running?  If so, do you have one with a HRM? Or do you use a separate HRM?

Re: HRM/GPS- recs?

  • 1) Other than distance and time, most of the stats on a treadmill are usually wrong. Sometimes very very wrong. I can grab the HRM on a treadmill and have a heartrate in the 180s. 10 seconds later, it's 80. Umm, no

    2) I have a Garmin 305, which does have a HRM, but it doesn't use it in the calculation to determine calories burned, oddly enough. Some of the newer Garmins do though.

  • 1. Kristin your border collie is adorable :) I love mine!

    2. OP, I am of no help here because I am NOT a runner, but I wanted to mention that over on thenest, pretty much all the ladies are runners, from 5k to full marathons so you may have a bunch more luck asing them, if you don't find what you're looking for here.  These ladies are super helpful, don't get me wrong! I just know that over there they are ALL runners, whereas here we're a mix :o
  • I don't use a GPS but I have a Polar F7 HRM with chest strap that's been awesome.  I love being able to see accurate stats.  Because as PP said, the machine's stats are not accurate.
  • Thanks, Kristin!  I appreciate the info- I had a feeling that the treadmill data for my heart rate was way off when it said 180-something and I had only run for 10 minutes :)

My company gives us $ for following fitness and health programs each year.  I'll be getting the money next week and I can't wait to spend it on a garmin :)

<div>Thats awesome, enjoy! I forget which of the Garmins use your HR in the calories burned calc, but I'm sure you can look it up. I do love mine, but I hardly ever wear the HR strap so it doesn't matter to me.</div>

  • Kristin- do you wear a different heart rate monitor or none at all?  Just curious if it's worth wearing/monitoring.

  • I use an ap on my Android phone to keep track of time and distance. It's Time Runner. It also has setting for intervals which I use frequently.

  • I have a Garmin 205 - I've had it for several years and it has run thousands and thousands of miles with me.  I absolutely love it and how I can upload the data to my computer.  I don't have an HRM, but some models include one.

  • Garmin 405cx.  It's my best friend. I never use my HRM.
  • I use run keeper app on my andriod. It does the following:
    Distance
Average time to complete 1 km
you can set intervals by distance or time
It also apparently tells you calories burned.... I dont follow this though since it doesnt ask for your age, sex, weight, height etc. The app 'knows' nothing about me lol.

<div>No I don't wear one at all. I don't run for weight loss (especially with the "runger" of half marathon training) so I don't really care what my heart rate is.</div>

  • I have a Garmin 410. love it. don't have the heartrate monitor because I just use it for pace and distance info for half/full marathon training. its a lifesaver in races because it keeps me from starting off too fast!

Kristin - I am running NYC Half next weekend, too! My first NYC road race, pretty psyched! Good luck!

<div>Awesome, me too! It's my second half, and I'm hoping to take some time off my last one since most of it will be so flat. </div>
