DJ recommendations?

So I am just starting to look at DJ's for a reception in downtown Milwaukee.  I have an appointment with CAP DJ Wedding Entertainment set for next week.  Has anyone used them?  If so, what did you think?  I am also looking for other suggestions for DJ's in the area.  I would like to stay at less than $1,500 for a full evening of music.  I am also interested in some additional venue uplighting, and I know some DJ's are able to provide this as well.  Any comments are welcome.

Both my sister and I used Sound by Design and were very happy. We paid $1100 for our wedding on a Saturday in May. Ask to have the owner Paul do your wedding. We ended up having his brother David but were still very happy. They are very professional and not cheesy. I was irritated by some of the other DJs I contacted because even their sales pitch or materials they sent were obnoxious.

Sound By Design is the best...hands down!  Been to many weddings they have done for my friends, and we used them too!

Ditto Sound by Design--used them for a few corporate events in the past and booked them without any question for my wedding in September.

Aside from Paul and David, Ramsey is also another very popular DJ with Sound By Design.

We used All Star Music (in 2008 we paid around 800 for 6 hours)  Loved working with them and the DJ went above and beyond all night.

We are using Midwest Sound.  So far they have been great!  Plus they are only $595 for a winter wedding.  I think others have said they are around $895 for a summer wedding.  Not sure when you are getting married, but they have been nothing but amazing and they have a worksheet online where you can choose not only what you want played, but the type of DJ you want and which types of traditional dances you want.  They also have great customer service (from what I've dealt with). After almost going with a small DJ in Madison, I'm very happy we switched to Midwest Sound.  I trust them a lot more than I did the other DJs I looked at (and the others were WAY more expensive!)

Sound by Design.  Paul Hackbarth is a pro and now he offers uplighting!  We just upgraded our package with him, and it's still a reasonable price--under your budget.  That's music all night and soft lighting around the room.  He's awesome and so is his mom.  She's doing our invitations!

Thanks so much for the advice.  I will take a look at both suggestions.  I also appreciate the names of the DJ's your've seen in action.  It makes me concerned when you don't know who you're going to have with the bigger companies when you don't have a name.

We are using Waxx Mobile DJ service for our downtown Milwaukee wedding next summer.  Michael Jackson is the owner and they are based in Racine, but free travel up to 50 miles.  We are paying $500 for the ENTIRE night (5pm-12am) with set-up, take-down and lighting included. :)  He is very nice and is very genuine in wanting to make your night the best and funnest night possible.

We'll be using Sound by Design too.  They're one of the preferred vendors at our location, which is important, especially given the venue - the Marcus Center for Performing Arts.
