January 2012 Weddings

Why January?

Hi guys, my first post here...I have been lurking for a while but been posting more lately because you guys are just a cool bunch :-).  Sorry if this has already been asked...

I am curious:  why did you all choose January as your wedding month?  It is not the most popular choice and I would love to hear why.  I am nosey too!

Here is my story:  We got engaged May 2008 and I started planning but quickly became tired of all the wedding planning bs and the drama so I pretty much forgot about it for a while.  In January 2011 I made a New Year's resolution to finally have our wedding and get married!  Our anniversary is Jan 10, and we agreed that was too close to the holidays (and not a Saturday or Sunday), so we just picked Jan 28.  We just liked the idea of combining our first date anniversary with our wedding anniversary.

I am so glad we went with January because I have not had to worry about booking vendors!  I haven't found that much is cheaper though, maybe it's just the area I live in.

Ok, enough about me.  What about you?  Why January?

Re: Why January?

  • My fiancee and I met in August.  So doing it on the anniversary of our first date didn't work.  My parents, an aunt, and a cousin are all married in August.

    As for why January...

    Jan 23 (my birthday) + 2 = Jan 25 (wedding day) = Jan 27 (her birthday) - 2
  • It honestly came down to finances for us. I looked up the "off" months to have a wedding and they were listest as January, March, and Feb. Jan was the least expensive month, Feb was my bday and valentines day so those ruled it out and March seemed waaaay to far away! So we choose January. We ended up picking the 28th orginially but to save even more money (and we had to work around FI's work schedule) we decided to get married on the 27th, since it's a Friday we saved more money at our venue.

We saved at least $3000 by planning a  January wedding.

We got engaged December of 2010.  Originally we were looking at April of 2012 but it quickly changed to January for two reasons.  The first being my FI thought of having our wedding at a lodge in the mountains in the winter.  I immediately agreed it was perfect for us.  Now to find a date in the winter.  I work full time and I'm a full time student.  I didn't want to be planning a wedding for the middle or end of a semester.  Hence January 7th.  It's between semesters and after the holidays.  My mom suggested New Years but I wanted to keep it separate.

Sadly my school starts back up on the 9th so I'll miss the first week of classes due to our honeymoon.  I'm not worried since that week there are still people adding and dropping.  But it's not ideal.  I don't know why we start so early.  All of the other schools around here start the week after that.

  • well... we have known eachother for 15 years and when we got engaged (May 2010), we knew we wanted to get married right away (we want to have kids together and since I am already 35, time is a ticking).... well we looked at Dec 2010, but since I am a single mom, I get good tax breaks, so doing it in January allowed me 1 more gift from uncle sam (well not really as I pay a TON in taxes, but at least I am able to get some back).

Also, we have tons of family travelling from England, and we figured if they came to CO in January, they could ski!

    So that is us!  Now I can't wait - 22 days :)

I'm not sure about your school, but if it's anything like mine, you might want to talk to your professors before you leave.  When I went to Va Tech, anybody not there the first week got dropped so that those who needed the class could add into it.  So we were always told never skip the first week of class.
  • My FI was orginally enlisted in the Army National Guard after we got engaged so we needed to pick a month when he would be back from his training in order to avoid him getting deployed before the wedding. He was turned down because he has an anxiety disorder. By that time we were midway through our planning and paid deposits on our venues and just decided not to change it.

  • sassygirl5401 - that is so awesome that you saved money!

I know, sometimes the date comes down to convienience for us and others we care about.  Like how we tried to avoid birthdays and holidays when picking a date.

  • honestly I wanted to get married in January for a couple of reasons.  I have 4 brothers and only 2 have married.  The first got married in April outdoors and it was miserably hot. We sweated in places we didn't know was possible.  My second brother got married in June in Cozumel, Mexico.  Pretty, not as hot, but humid.  I am a very hotstnatured person and told myself. I don't want to be burning hot and sweating in my wedding dress.  I also love january, snow, snowflakes, wintery stuff.  So thus we chose January.

  • I live in New Orleans and there is always a festival so I tried to pick when there wasn't. I was going to pick March 17th, but pushed it up since we would have been engaged 2+ years at that point (we have been engaged for 2 right now)

We got liucky we didn't pick the weekend bfore our wedding b/c it is a HUGE college football game, but the weekend of our wedding may be a home Saints playoff game, which could be a problem!

In February it is Mardi Grsd

    March st. patty day

    April - May Jazz Fest

and after that it was just to hot and too far into the year. Also hurricane season until November 30th!

I planned to email my teachers to let them know why I wasn't there and to ask for an email with the syllabus and any assignments the week before I leave.  I'm not sure if they drop you if you aren't there the first week or not.  I haven't heard of that but you never know.  I just don't want to be super behind that second week.  :)

  • January 13 is our first date anniversary!  We are getting married on Saturday, January 14 and having our rehearsal dinner on Friday, January 13 at the same restaurant we had our first date.  We didn't think the 14th was too close to Christmas and it was a 3-day weekend which is helpful to our guests who are out of town.

January certainly works out for the pricing, vendor availability, etc.  It also worked for our job schedules.

On a completely silly note, my curly hair is less frizzy in the winter and FI didn't want to sweat thru the ceremony.  January just worked!
Wedding bliss since January 14, 2012!

FI was in ROTC, and would have been commission in May. We didn't want to risk deployments and trainings, because they couldn't guarentee us that he wouldn't leave immediately. He was turned down too, but for narcolepsy, and we also just decided not to change anything.

How adorable! We have a similar thing, our dating anniversary is May 21, so we decided to keep with the same number, and since we were already going with January, and it happened to be a Saturday, it just seemed like destiny.

It's probably one of those things that vary by school.  Good idea emailing the professors...:)
  • We decided to get married in January to fit my school schedule. I didn't want to get married during summer because I didn't want to be all sweaty and gross (I much prefer to be cold).

We picked January 14 because January 7 seemed too close to the holidays. Also, the semester wasn't scheduled to start until January 23 so that gave us a week off for our honeymoon. Unfortunately, I ended up moving and switching schools so school now starts January 12.
  • Congrats!!

    1. money its cheaper

    2. fits FI and my grad school schedule

    3. I wanted my wedding to stand out. Everyone has theirs in the summer.

    4. MONEY! Seriously its cheaper.
  • Because New Orleans is hot and humid as hell the rest of the year.  Cool weather with little to no humidity, means fabulous hair, Duh.
  • My number one reason is money. I have been engaged since last December and thought a year engagement would be long enough. I did not want to marry during the busy holiday season. I love snow and think pictures would be amazing, if lucky enough to get some. The last reason would be because every single person I told January said, Why January? Which made me want to do it even more. I am having a very small and intimate ceremony and so excited to share the day with loved ones.

Congrats on being uniquely you and having your wedding in January!

    Ditto!

It's funny.  I never really thought about it being cheaper until we started to book things.  It's amazing how much cheaper things get when you tell them a Wednesday in January.
  • I love winter. And snow. If my birthday wasn't in December and I didn't always make such a huge deal over the holidays, I probably would've chosen December, to be honest. It's my favorite time of year.

There's such a unique beauty to winter weddings -- I'm really excited about it and glad that as of right now we're the only people we know that have one. Plus, it's hot in summer. Yuck.
