  I booked mine about 6-7 months out. Only because the original officiant I asked was already book for the whole summer

  We asked our right away because we didn't want him to be booked for something else if we waited.  He is our priest from college and new that he would have to travel for it.  We wanted to make sure that our date would work for him to come.

  I don't think it's to early.  That way you can be assured that you have him for your ceremony.  You'd be surprised how fast they book up!  = )

  We booked our first choice officiant a year out, but he backed out on us a few months before the wedding. Our second was about 3 mo prior. I learned that it is always better to do things early just in case they don't work out.

  Personally, I would go ahead and ask him now. It doesn't hurt anything, and it's always a relief to get on somebody's schedule and not have to worry about it later.
