Non-Traditional Father/Daughter Song?

I need help finding a father/daughter song for our dance that is the traditional song. My dad wasn't there for me when I grew up, him and my mom got divorced while I was young and he was barely around. I love my dad and know he did the best he knows how to do so I want to still do the dance but I don't know of any songs that could apply to our situation. I don't want a song all about how close we were when I was young because I think that would put more focus on how untrue the lyrics are for us but I still want to make sure it's a song that shows that I accept what he did and love him all the same.
Any suggestions?

    I'm in a similar situation.  I'm using "What I Did for Love" from the musical "A Chorus Line" to dance with my dad.  It's non-traditional to be sure, but has meaning from happier times with him when I was young.  For some reason today I was thinking about the song "I Hope You Dance" by LeeAnn Womack.  Might be worth considering.

    I actually considered "I Hope You Dance" because it was one of the closest things I could find that would fit. I also had the idea of maybe asking him if he wanted to pick a song? But I don't know if that would be weird to ask of him or not.

    I don't think it would be weird to ask him at all.  But, it sounds like you are concerned that the song be appropriate to your situation, and giving him the choice doesn't allow you to control that (if you give him the choice you pretty much have to go with whatever he picks.)  Maybe a compromise - pick a couple of songs that you are comfortable with, and then let him pick from those?

    I was just listening to random music last night and heard the acoustic version of wonderwall by oasis and thought it could work really well. I don't know if you've ever heard it or not? But it fits well I think.
    My only thing with picking a song that's traditional with the whole "tucked me into bed each night, was there every day" sort of thing is that a lot of people that will be at the wedding know our history and I'm afraid it will bring more attention to the fact that he wasn't there when I was little. I could just be paranoid but I definitely don't want my dad to feel uncomfortable in any way.

    I don't think you can go wrong with a song you like and fits your situation. In my situation the lovey-dovey "daddy's girl" stuff is not appropriate either. Most would consider "What I Did For Love" a pretty unconventional choice, but it's right for me. So I advise you to go with your gut feeling on this one!

    I'm in the same situation. I've been thinking about using Billy Joel's "Lullabye (Goodnight my Angel)"  but I'm still not sure.

    My Dad and I are dancing to the instrumental version of Beauty in the Beast. He is a piano player, and when I was a kid he would play it to help me fall asleep at night. It fits our life perfectly and it is not your traditional song.

    I completely understand and im in the exact situation.  He also tends to put himself before everyone else and to help the moment NOT be about him... i'm thinking of using Stevie Wonder - isnt she lovely.
