different dresses for bridesmaids

i hate the idea of bridesmaids wearing the same dress.  i have seen many beautiful wedding parties on pinterest in which the bridesmaids all have different dresses in a similar color scheme.  i only have three attendants, so i feel this is doable.  has anyone done this and do they have any suggestions?

Re: different dresses for bridesmaids

  • I'm letting my bridesmaids pick their own styles.  They'll be the same designer, color, length, and fabric.  Partly this is to suit their very different body shapes, and parly for convenience, as both BM and MOH are at a distance.

How closely do you want them to match?  If you want the color to match, you'll need to choose a single designer and fabric.  If you're OK with different shades, than these can be more flexible.

  • All of my ladies are doing little black dresses...all different styles though.
  • My three girls all wore different dresses. I just asked that they be black, floor length, and the same material. That way they could pick something that best fit both their bodies and their budgets. I think if you stick to something like that, your BMs will look very nice together.

  • I am letting my girls pick their dress, length and material.  I only told them what color it had to be. I have a wide range of body shapes in my wedding and want everyone comfortable.

  • I have 3 BMs too and I gave them a color, fabric, length and designer. I told them to pick a dress they can see themselves wearing again. They're all different body shapes and they all picked dresses that flatter them. Go for it!

We did this and loved it!  My BM's fought me on it before because they wanted to match, but once they realized that they really liked different dresses, they were all for it!  I just picked a color at David's Bridal and told them to pick whatever dress.  They all ended up going with short, but I was fine with whatever!

  • We're doing LBD's and I have 3BMs.  I told them the color and length, but I now wish I had been more specific about styles-and that I has asked to give final approval before they bought their dresses! It's probably best to tell them which store to purchase the dresses from or show them examples of your vision for the wedding day. One of my girls chose a dress I didn't feel was appropriate and I there was lots of drama!  If you can communicate your ideas/overall wedding vision, you should be fine! :)
