Look for a Different Dress?

So I got my dress back in January.  Yes I realize it was too early.  Now I'm not sure if I like this dress.  It's this one by Oleg Cassini.

I wanted a mermaid dress, but my mom wanted me in lace.  I tried this on and she and my sister loved it.  My mom loved it so much she offered to pay for it.  5 Months later and she's only paid me back $200 (I had to pay for it that day and she'd pay me back).  The dress is currently sitting in my closet in the bag and hasn't been altered.  We never bought the underskirt or the strapless bra.

The main issue is that I don't think I would have bought this dress had they not loved it so much.  It's pretty, but I had never liked the appliques.  I wanted something with more flare, and no lace.  And cheaper.  This dress was a good $500 over my price limit.  And that's without alterations.

So my question is:  Would it be wrong to look for a different, cheaper dress?  Even if I took a small loss on selling this one, I'd save if I could find a dress for under $500.  I'd sell this one I already have.  I know my mom and sister love it, but I don't really know if it's the one I want to get married in.

Ultimately, it's your dress. I think you need to wear something that you feel 100% confident in and about.

  • Did you get the dress at David's Bridal? Because if you did, you can exchange your dress for a different one. It doesn't matter if it is now or 3 months before the wedding, they will give you store credit and you can get another dress.

I agree with PP. I think you NEED to feel comfortable on your wedding day. If you didn't love the dress that day & you don't love it now you probably aren't going to love it next May, either.

You still have plenty of time to find a new dress!

  • I agree with what everyone has said. You have to love your dress.

  • Yeah, you definitely have to love it. I'd try it on again just to see how you feel and go from there. I don't think it'd be wrong to go with a different dress, since it's still current and you haven't done anything to it- you probably wouldn't lose much $$ selling it.

  • If you are not 100% sold on this dress, I would not wear it on your wedding day. I agree with SSaltz about trying it on again just to see how you feel though.

  • yup, get something new.
When I got married the first time, I ended up getting a 2nd dress for the exact. same. reason. (minus the "paying me back" part).
Turns out my mom loved my second dress even more :)

  • My mom pitched a fit today when I told her I had listed my dress online to sell it.  She kept asking what I didn't like about it, and then said she never told me to buy it in the first place.  I give up with her.  Hopefully it'll sell and then I can start looking for one I really like.  Thanks for the advice!

  • you need be comfortable in your dress and love it. even though you will only wear it for a day you will see pic and video of it for life.  As for your mom i say next time you go dress shopping i honestly would leave her home. That may seem harsh or tell her she has no input.
  • Thanks.  I know what dress I want, or what style, but I'm also fully aware my mom and my sister (MOH) hate it.  My mom's already shown my sister a picture and said how she doesn't like it.  Apparently it's too plain, even if I choose the style that has a beaded sash.  So needless to say they aren't going with me to try the options on.
