DIY Flowers - Preservatives?

I've been planning on DIYing my centerpieces.  I picked up a couple stems of the flowers I want to use from the florist we're using for the bouquets so I could try to make a mock up.  It came out looking fantastic, but my infamous "black thumb" struck and the flowers looked pretty sad after about 12 hours.  My mom had suggested maybe adding a preservative, either one to the water or one that you can spray over the flowers themselves.  I was wondering if anyone else had used a preservative, what you used, and if you had any suggestions?

  • I think you're supposed to keep them cold/refrigerated?  That's all I've got - sorry!

Hopefully someone else will have a more helpful suggestion lol

  • Did you give the stems a fresh cut when you brough them home?  I floral preservative WILL help and this may be something the florist can provide as well, but JennLax is right, they need to be kept cool.

  • Yeah I gave them a fresh cut under running water.  I'm thinking I'm going to talk to the florist about what I could add to help them last a little longer.  I'm nervous since we're getting them on the Thursday before the wedding, so I need them to last 3 full days...eep!
  • Hi! I will actually be doing my own floral centerpieces as well - along with what the other girls suggested, the first thing that came across my mind was "are these flowers acually fresh?"

Do you know when they actually arrived at your florist's shop?

I purchased flowers from the flower market in LA and without any preservatives, they lasted well over a week.

I'm not sure it's your black thumb that's the problem. :)

    Good luck!
