NWR: Vacuum Recs?

I guess this is sort of wedding related because it's about adding this item to our registry.

We are looking at a Dyson vacuum for our registry, basically because we've heard people say how wonderful they are, but we have no idea what makes one model better than another.  So, if you have a Dyson (or another vacuum brand you'd recommend), please share!  We do have a dog, but she is very small and doesn't shed, so we don't need the Dyson Animal.  TIA!

Its the suction and how fast that vacuum will lose suction power over time.  Sure, Dyson has some other cool fetaures- like the rolly ball thing and being bagless- but the reason they are so highly rated is because they don't lose their suction power as quickly as others.

Thanks for the info.  Is that what differentiates the different Dyson models too (the level of suction?)?  They have a DC24, DC25 and DC14 and other than the fact that 2 of them have the ball, I don't really have any idea which is better, or which would meet our needs.  Do you own one?  Any particular Dyson model you'd recommend?

FI and I got the pet hair Dyson a couple years ago and we HATE it.  It is such a pain.  We have a husky and we have to empty it out about 4 or 5 times each time we vacuum the house- this is expected and we would have to deal with it with any vacuum.  My problem with it is that it started to smell bad (we never vacummed liquids or anything like that with it).  FI took it apart to clean it and it is a pain- we pretty much have to take it apart and clean it everytime we use it.  Oh and I also have to argue that our Dyson did lose its suction power pretty fast.

I ended up registering for just a plain old Hoover Windtunnel bagged vacuum for the wedding.  My mom has used these for years with her dogs and loves it.

Dyson makes a vaccum for pet dander.  You should look into that... it also helps eliminate odors.

FYI if you get a Dyson from Sears they do all maintenance on it (they don't make you send it to the company or anything) and they do tune-ups (I don't really know what vaccuum tune-ups are...maybe change belts or something) for free every year.

I have had my Dyson Animal for 4 years and I LOVE it. We purchased it at BBB and have had no issues with it. We have long haired cats so we use it very frequently. As long as we clean it out, we havent had any suction problems at all. My parents have one as well (they have a pom, collie and two beagles that wonder in and out as well as cats and they have never had any issues. I think it is totally worth the cost and if you purchase at BBB you can use the 20% off coupon.

We have a Dyson DC25 and love love love it. It sucks EVERYTHING out of the carpet and can switch to hardwood from carpet so easily.  Clean up is a breeze... sure it has to be emptied often but it's bc it is so effective at cleaning.
Like a pp said, it's the suction that makes this so great. The ball isn't uber impressive to me, I could leave it or take it. but the suction power WOW! You pay for it, but well worth the money.
