bridal Photo shoot info please

I browsed the first 5 pages of posts or so and couldn't find what I needed so forgive me if this has been posted before...

I am a write and this week i ma doingan article on wedding photography.  I am from the East coast originally and Bridal photo shoots with just the bride aren't big there but I want to include them in my article. What I am looking for is just details about bridal photo shoots...

How important are they where you are from?
What poses are standard?
What is the average cost?
What is done with the photos? Are they just put in an album or used elsewhere?
Do you still get engagement photos? trash the dress photos?

Any other interesting tidbits or stories about your bridal photos would help! Thanks in advance!

In Utah, bridal photo shoots have always been popular.  Most wedding photo packages have an option to include them; ala carte pricing ranges from $250 to $500.  I think that whether or not a bride does them is very much contingent on the wedding budget and whether or not the bride enjoys photos of herself.

(Additionally, many hair/makeup packages and dress rental prices include options for a bridal session.)

I don't really think that there are standard poses--just things that show off the dress.  Right now photos in urban decay environments are extremely popular (dirty alley, burnt-out train car, graffiti wall, etc.)

The photos are usually made into large prints and displayed at the wedding reception.  I have also seen them frequently hanging in people's homes (perhaps since they made the prints for the reception, they have to use them somewhere else?).  I think that a former bride likes to see them because the wedding day is not only one of the most important days of her life, but it's also quite possibly the day that she felt the most beautiful.

For a while there, trash-the-dress was super-popular, but I haven't seen much of them in the past year or so.

And yes, engagement photos are still done and are considered a staple.  In Utah, the vast majority of invitations are printed on one ore more photos.  (Invitations that are simply printed on nice paper and do not include a photo are extremely rare).  I hate to use generalities, but everyone gets engagements done.

Additionally, many couples out here are choosing to do groomals instead of bridals; groomals are done with both the bride and the groom, and are done in advance of the wedding, like bridals.  Some photographers have no extra charge for groomals, while others tack on a fee of about $75 to include the groom.

There are a few reasons why I think that groomals are gaining popularity:

    *  Because of the religious setting of many Utah weddings, that magical moment when the groom first sees his bride is never captured on film.  Groomals offer a way to get that moment.

    *  It offers a way to have the photos of the couple on display at the reception.

    *  You can spend a lot of time doing photos on a different day, and then have more time for friends and family on the wedding day.

Hope this info helps you out!
